Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published
1: A fragment of cast Roman pale blue/green window glass, roughly rectangular in shape, measuring 25mm by 19mm in size and 4mm in thickness. A complete corner survives with rounded edges and a tooling mark near the corner, so this glass was square or rectangular in shape when complete. One face is rough to the touch with tiny circular dimples on it, the other is smooth and more translucent. Small air bubbles can be seen within the glass.

Object type: WINDOW
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two fragments of Roman window glass. Cast window glass was probably produced by pouring molten glass into trays resulting in relatively thick panes with a characteristic flat, rough underside, a glossy, slightly undulating upper surface, frequently with tooling marks and a rounded edge (Boon 1966). Most cast window glass is blue/green, as are these examples, but pale green, greenish colourless and colourless fragments are also known.

A 16th century silver huntman's whistle, now full of soil and incomplete and damaged at the mouth piece end. This whistle is cut from silver sheet and soldered; it is cylindrical and increases in diameter from the mouth-piece to the open end. Two wire collars divide the whistle into three sections; the upper section has a mouth-piece with a damaged sound hole. The central section is decorated with diagonal ribs. The lower section is undecorated but its circular end has an applied rim of filigree wire. There is a damaged suspension loop on the underside of the whistle.

Description: An incomplete 16th -17th century silver huntsman's whistle. This whistle is cut from silver sheet and soldered; it is cylindrical in shape. Two triple stranded wire collars divide the whistle into three sections; of which only the central section survives. This central section is undecorated and has a circular suspension loop soldered onto its underside one end. Fragments of the terminal sections of the whistle survive and are distorted, one of these fragments is flaring in width and therefore more likely to be the mouthpiece end of the whistle.

A complete copper-alloy post medieval whistle, 42.53mm in length and 10.33mm in width. U-shaped with a circular cross-section one terminal has a circumferencial groove and is filled with corroded iron, presumably deriving from the another object it was attached to. The outer face of this terminal also has a moulded foliate design. The whistle then bends abruptly and the second terminal has an open end with a seperate piece of possibly bone filling three quarters of it leaving a small space through which air could be blown. Behind this it a V-shaped notch and below it a decorative d…

An incomplete whetstone or hone with a copper-alloy suspension loop attached, most likely to be of medieval date. The stone itself is grey in colour with fine micaeous inclusions, it is rectangular in shape and flaring in width towards its terminal, it is now fragmentary due to breaks, all surviving surfaces have grooves and striations on them, persumably created through use. A possible whetstone of unknown date, it is rectangular in shape and measures 71.72mm in length 30.47mm in width and 14.1mm in thickness. The stone appears to be a limestone and has scratches across its faces and deep diagonal grooves along one side. Both faces have circular semi-perforated holes in opposing corners, these holes are in the same position in both faces but why they were not drilled all the way through is unknown. It is possible that this object is unfinished.
