The original record had no description. The following description was compiled from the photographs.
Copper-alloy seal matrix, flat and pointed-oval in shape. The central motif is a very simple engraved cross with seriffed ends. The inscription around is between beaded borders, and reads * S' PRIS. ROGERI DE. OS. PITAL' The meaning of this inscription is currently obscure but it clearly refers to a Roger of the Hospital. Reaney and Wilson note a Geoffrey del Hospital in Somerset in 1210 (1976, 329, under Spittle).

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published
Medieval copper-alloy buckle. It has a D-shaped frame with offset narrowed bar, and an outside edge which swells smoothly to a thick, wide centre which is recessed for a separate roller. The narrow copper-alloy roller survives in place and is apparently undecorated. At the tapered ends of the loop, where it meets either end of the bar, there is a rounded lobe; the angle between lobe and loop appears to retain traces of gilding. Compare Egan and Pritchard 1991, no. 270, which came from a late 12th-century context in London.
