Part of the rim of a large open vessel, probably a garden vessel, possibly a decorative bowl or relatively modern date. The piece is made in a coarse but high fired dark orange fabric with numerous air gaps giving a laminar structure. The fabric has sparse fine quartz temper and occasional very large, up to 6mm globular clay pellets and occasional white rounded inclusion up to 1mm, probably limestone. The rim is from a widening mouth of a vessel of large diameter. There is a beaded rounded rim on the outer side with an unusual applied decoration on the outer side. The decoration is of…

Flat rim 21.6mm wide projecting out horizontally from the side wall with a rounded outed edge and rounded projecting on the inner face. The lower part of the rim, below this horizontal projecting appears to be slightly concave and to have broken before the carination where the vessel wall would have expanded out again. Report of a large group of mainly Post Medieval pottery with some late Medieval and early 18th century sherds. Report by David Dawson, 31st January 2017. This report has been submitted to the HER but is also recorded here to ensure it remains associated with the reports of the small finds form this site as well as previously recorded pottery.
Report:
The core date of the collection, all much eroded by being in the plough soil, seems to be 17th century with four sherds that are late medieval and a further nine that could be as late as late 17th/early 18th century, viz;
1 sherd…

A piece of post medieval ceramic kiln furniture dating to the period c. AD 1600 - 1800. The fragment comprises a piece of a tile setter or tile rack. It exhibits a series of incomplete parallel projections on both sides which would have held high quality tiles in place during the firing process.
The fabric is a buff-red colour and exhibits occasional white silicaceous inclusions.
The artefact most likely derives from the Dunster Warren brickworks.
The object measures 125.71mm in length, 83.51mm maximum width, 15.26mm minimum width, 60.22mm maximum thickness, 27.34mm minimum t…

A small body sherd with sparse flat, angular pieces of stone (up to 5-6mm), and poorly sorted moderated quartz sand temper, with some finer material. The piece is broken on all sides. It is shallowly curved in profile. It appears to have a dark-grey slip over a light-grey core. The rough surface, especially internally, would suggest a medieval date, as would thin thin walls, although an earlier date cannot be ruled out entirely.

Rim sherd from a 17th-18th century glazed cream pancheon. The fabric is dark grey with bright orange oxidised areas on the outer side. The fabric has sparse very fine quartz sand and limestone inclusions. The limestone is up to 1.3mm across. The inner side is glazed with a mid olive-brown glaze and there are splashes on the outer side; the glaze is clear in places on the rim suggesting the inner side may be mis-coloured. The rim is tuned out with a slightly angular expansion on the outer side with an angled top edge and outer side. The reduced firing and glaze colour may suggest it is…

Two fragments, one body, one base, of a medieval jug of 13th/14th century date. Both sherds show signs of misfiring with grey, over-fired mid-grey fabrics and speckled/bubbley glaze. The fabric has abundent fine quartz temper. The body sherd is 3.4mm thick with bubbly green glaze covering one side, 5 grams. The base is flat with foot rim around the outer edge.
