A Post Medieval gold finger ring - memento mori (1670-1740). The plain thin gold band is engraved on the exterior with a skull and inscribed inside in lower case: 'Remember to dye', with a maker's mark GB in a quatrefoil shield with a pellet above and below. This type of ring had a long life from around 1670 to the 1730s, but as the mark is not listed in the standard London goldsmiths' marks sources, it is not possible to confirm a pre-1708 date for this ring. J. Rudoe British Museum 24.9.08 Dimensions: diameter: 19.70mm; width: 3.50mm; thickness: 1.03mm; weight: 2.50g.

A gold posy ring of 16th-17th century date. The ring is of large heavy hoop, of D-section, with plain exterior and inscribed on the inside in capitals I * LIKE * MY * CHOYE. The inscription retains much of the original black enamel. The final word 'choice' is interpreted in the treasure report as being misspelt, with the letter 'C' omitted. However, there is also the possibilty that a line under the 'Y' was intended as a sub-script 'C'. The ring is of 22.5mm external diameter with a band width of 7mm. It weighs 11.13g

Complete gold post-medieval finger ring. The hoop is formed from a thin band that is semicircular in section, having a flat inner face. The exterior of the hoop is engraved with a skull flanked by pointed triangular panels with traces of white enamel in a lozenge pattern. The skull may once have been enamelled black. The interior of the ring is inscribed Prepared be to follow me IK ob 4 1st 67' (IK having died 4th January 1667), containing much of its original black enamelling. Complete 16th or 17th century gold finger ring. The ring is cast so that the hoop is formed from ten domes or hemispheres, i.e. it has a semicircular section. The inner surface of the hoop is inscribed with the legend LET+ VIRTU+ GUIDE+ THE followed by an engraved flower spray. This inscription is recorded by Joan Evans (English Posies and Posy Rings, Oxford 1931, pp. 68-9) in the 1596 Harleian Manuscript and she gives several variants in wording and spelling. There are three examples in the BM, Dalton 1239-1241. The ring has an external diameter 17.64mm and weighs 5.33g.

An undecorated gold finger ring, triangular in section and stamped internally with SH in a shield. I am greatful to Judy Rudoe for the following note: "As far as the shape is concerned, with no exterior decoration there is no evidence to dateit to more than 300 years old. As for the mark, the style of the letters and the shape of the shield is comparable to marks of the mid to late 18th. None of this suggests that it falls within the Treasure Act."

A Post-Medieval silver gilt posy finger ring (16th- early 17th century). The finger ring has a broad flat hoop with beaded borders that are, in turn, bordered by a raised rib. There is an inscription on the outer surface along the mid-line. The inscription in capital letters reads: "+ THINKS X ON X ME". The gilding is worn on the lower and upper edges of the finger ring. It is very similar in form but with a different inscription to the posy finger ring found in Drayton Parslow, Buckinghamshire that was dated to the 16th or early 17th century (Treasure annual report 2003: 126 no. 256)…

This tiny gold ring is inscribed inside: ‘Your absence is my greefe’ in lower case script, and was presumably a gift between separated lovers. There is also a maker’s mark, which is very close to Grimwade no. 1731 (Grimwade, 1976) and can almost certainly be identified with it. The mark is that of John Vickerman, small worker, entered 20 May 1768. This ring is mid 18th century and does not fall within the Treasure Act. The hoop is D-shaped in section and measures 17.7mm in diameter. It weighs 1.79g.

A Modern silver gilt finger ring with green stone setting (1800-1900). The thin hoop has a D-shaped cross-section and is moulded decoratively on either side of the bezel. The filigree decoration forms a small ring, than a triangle with rounded corners; a ring and dot, and finally a mirrored curling 'S' shape in a scroll motif. This pattern is repeated on both sides of the bezel. The bezel is circular and flat with a raised collar in which the square cut green stone is set within a rubover setting. The collar rises up to four points that overlay the stone forming a quatrefoil motif. Th…

A silver gilt posy ring. This silver gilt ring with broad hoop is inscribed inside, in lower case script, 'I licke my chois'. The interior surface and inscription are worn and the ring itself is bent slightly out of shape. This inscription is recorded with several different spellings in Joan Evans (1931) 'English Posies and Posy Rings' and was certainly in use by 1674, but in the absence of any maker's mark or diagnostic decoration on the exterior there is not enough evidence to date this ring securely pre 1705 (Judy Rudoe, British Museum, 12/10/2005).

An enamelled gold posy ring. This ring has a thin hoop with foliate decoration on the exterior bearing remains of red, green and white enamel. The interior bears and inscription: 'Let vertue bee a guide to thee', and a maker's mark, PR, within a double oval. This is a commonly found inscription that remained popular well into the 18th century. The decoration too is consistent with a date in the 18th century. The mark does not appear in Grimwade, nor is it recorded by T. Kent in his book on West Country makers. In the absence of an identifiable mark there is no evidence to date this rin…

An enamelled gold memorial ring. This ring with its monogram in gold wire beaneath a faceted stone, foliate ornament of the shoulder in black enamel and decoration in back and white enamel on the underside of the bezel, is a characteristic type of the late 17th and early 18th century. Examples in the British Museum bear dated inscriptions from around 1690 to 1730. In the absence of such an inscription or an identifiable maker's mark, there is no evidence to date this ring pre 1705. The stone is cracked (Judy Rudoe, British Museum, 10th October 2005).

A gold posy ring of post-medieval date. Large heavy gold ring of D-shaped section, plain exterior, inscribed inside in lower case script: God did decree our unitie. A significant amount of black enamel survives in the inscription. Note: This inscription is not recorded by Joan Evans (English Posies and Posy Rings, Oxford 1931), but the BM holds three rings with this inscription, with variant spellings of 'unity': Dalton Ring cat. 1163 and 1164, and 1961,12-2,167. None can be precisely dated, but all are either 17th or 18th century. The style of lettering continues well into the 1720s …
