Report on potential Treasure for H M Coroner Treasure Number: 2015 T516 Description: Gold ring with circular bezel, decorated with wirework heart above a V shape, the V filled in with enamel, a thin hoop, the shoulders decorated with horizontal engraved lines where they join the bezel. Dimensions: Diameter: 25.29mm Width: 1.59-7.83mm Thickness: 0.95mm Weight: 2g Discussion: This is an unusual piece which no-one recognises. It could possibly be late 18th, given the form of the shoulders which does loosely correspond to 18th century types, but we can find no par…

TREASURE CASE: 2011 T278 Description: Silver-plated copper-alloy hippocamp, possibly a mount. Likely to be neo-classical and unlikely to be more than 300 years old. Discussion: This object has also been examined by Dr Ralph Jackson, Curator of Romano-British Collections. Dr Jackson does not believe this object to be Roman. Dimensions: Length: 31.72 mm Height: 21.66 mm Width: 9.75 mm Weight: 16.3 g The find dates to later than 1711 and the precious metal content of the find is probably below 10% and therefore it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Treasure case: 2006 T413 gold circular fitting This broad flat band has no bevelling or shaping at the edges which one would normally expect in a finger ring, suggesting that it is more likely to be a fitting of some kind. In the absence of any other diagnostic features such as decoration or inscription, there is no evidence to date this object pre-1706 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Post-Medieval Silver Fragment. This thin stamped flat strip is almost certainly part of a Victorian brooch, probably in the form of a knotted ribbon. Consequently, in terms of age, it does not fall within the scope of the Treasure Act.

silver ornamental ring This thin flat ring is formed of a band of interlace bordered by twisted wire above and below. In the absence of any maker's marks or hallmark it is difficult to be specific about its age and origins, but it is unlikely to be earlier than the late 19th or early 20th century.

gold mourning ring Date: 16th or 17th century Description: Gold ring with D-section hoop, the exterior plain apart from an engraved skull with traces of black enamel; the inside inscribed: Blessed are ye dead yt dy in ye Lord, together with a maker’s mark, I over V in an arrow-shaped shield. Discussion: This is a characteristic type in use from the late 17th century into the early 18th century. The inscription was in use by the late 16th century (according to Joan Evans it is recorded in the Harleian manuscript of 1596), and in the absence of a dated inscription, only the i…

gold posy ring Date: 16th or 17th century Description: Gold posy ring, formed of a flat broad band, the exterior with stylised foliate motifs, one edge much damaged; inscribed inside in a double row, with traces of black enamel: 1 * LIVE * IN . LOVE * AND THAYR * WYL * DE * THAYR [last word partly illegible] Discussion: This inscription is not recorded in J. Evans, English Posies and Posy Rings (Oxford 1931), and appears to have been misunderstood by the engraver. The second line may have been intended to read ‘Thy will desire’. In terms of age and as the object con…

Treasure case No: 2006 T433 Date: probably 16th or early 17th century Description: Silver-gilt ring, the hoop of D section, decorated on the exterior with a foliate wreath in relief, bound on each side and at top and bottom. The interior plain and the gilding much worn. Discussion: Although there is no precisely comparable ring in the British Museum, the general shape and decoration are consistent with a date in the 16th or 17th century. Metal content: The precious metal content fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%.

Small gold posy ring, slightly bent, the exterior keyed for enamel, none of which survives. The outside of the hoop is decorated with small engraved grooves, but there is no recognisable pattern. The inside bears the Latin inscription *DVE *DONA*A*QUI*LVPLEAT. The star at the beginning of the inscription retains all its light blue enamel, while the other stars have remains of blue enamel, as does the inscription. The exterior may have been enamelled in the same colour. The words of the inscription look like Latin, but they make no sense. There is no word 'LVPLEAT' for example. …
