TREASURE CASE NUMBER: 2011 T846 Post Medieval finger ring Date: 16th Century - early 17th Century Description: gold finger-ring, a broad band decorated on exterior with symbols of the passion within circular medallions against a punched ground, much worn. No inscription or mark on interior. Dimensions: Length: 22.95 mm Height: 5.59 mm Width: 18.48 mm Thickness: 1.36 mm Weight: 5.2 g Discussion: Although worn this is a nice example of a religious ring, the design and iconography suggests a 16th - early 17th Century date. Post Medieval to Modern gold finger ring. The band has a 'D' shaped cross section and has an inscription 'Content is a treasure' with the maklers mark Rn in a rectangle on the inside of the band. The ring weighs 4.41 grams and has a diameter of 19.66mm. Discussion: A similar inscription can be seen in Evans 90, 'Noe treasure to content' which has maker's mark dated 1630-62. However the makers mark appears to match AF.1338 (dated 17th- 18th Century - British Museum collection). Based on the design and the above information the ring cannot be securely dated to pre-1711 and as su…

A plain gold band with an inscription etched into the inside. A mourning ring. The inscription reads: R.F.29.9.97 Judy Rudoe of the British Museum explains: "Generally the omission of the first two letters of the year indicates a 17th-century date". The ring is complete, although it has suffered some post-depositional plough damage. It is D-shaped in section and was aproximately 23mm in diameter. The band is 3mm in width.

Fragmentary Gold Fitting (?) This thin gold strip has suffered much damage making identification extremely difficult. The raised decoration, visible on the reverse, suggests that it is most likely a fitting of some kind rather than a finger ring. In its present state it is impossible to date it with any accuracy but it is not thought to fall within the Treasure remit.

TREASURE CASE 2006 T407: silver ornamental ring This ring has a plain hoop, the bezel formed of an applied foliate ornament which is partly missing and therefore hard to decipher. The general form and construction of the ring suggest a date not earlier than the 19th century. It does not therefore qualify as Treasure. J. Rudoe British Museum 24.2.07

Complete gold post-medieval finger ring. The hoop is formed from a thin band that is semicircular in section, having a flat inner face. The exterior of the hoop is engraved with a skull flanked by pointed triangular panels with traces of white enamel in a lozenge pattern. The skull may once have been enamelled black. Complete 16th or 17th century gold finger ring. The ring is cast so that the hoop is formed from ten domes or hemispheres, i.e. it has a semicircular section. The inner surface of the hoop is inscribed with the legend LET+ VIRTU+ GUIDE+ THE followed by an engraved flower spray. This inscription is recorded by Joan Evans (English Posies and Posy Rings, Oxford 1931, pp. 68-9) in the 1596 Harleian Manuscript and she gives several variants in wording and spelling. There are three examples in the BM, Dalton 1239-1241. The ring has an external diameter 17.64mm and weighs 5.33g.
