Post-medieval copper alloy sword belt fitting, a rectangular plate with a flat front and a hollowed reverse. At one end there is a pierced lobe with remains of an iron rivet, and at the other end a rear-facing hook above which there is a grooved collar with an integral rivet on the reverse. An incomplete and distorted sheet backplate is secured by the rivets. The form is similar to that of Read 2001, no. 355 and Read 2008, no. 786, cf. SUSS-F8BF75. Fragment of a medieval to post-medieval book clasp probably of Howsam 2016 Type A.3.1. The sides run parallel from an old transverse break before splaying out towards what would probably have been a fishtail terminal. Just before this widening there are four round holes, one incomplete and one filled with remains of a copper alloy rivet. There are faint traces of a pair of engraved or stamped longitudinal lines. Weight 1.32g. Extant length and width 25 and 15mm. 15th - 16th century.

At the non-recent break the cross-section is concavo-convex and the hollowed reverse continues to the foot on which there are four slight rounded projections. Heavily sooted on all unbroken surfaces. Extant length 39.5mm. Width and thickness at the break 32.5 and 16mm. Width and length of footprint 37 and 23.3mm. Weight 129.58g. 14th - 17th century.
