Lower Palaeolithic handaxe. Dimensions >120 x 82 x 35mm. Pointed ovate, broken at the pointed tip. Probably made on a large flake, the dorsal face of which is finished by peripheral flaking except for a large inclusion which has apparently resisted removal. The ventral face is more completely finished by shallow peripheral flaking. The main body of the handaxe is stained brown, with large areas of buff, particularly on the dorsal face. The break at the tip is not recent, but is lightly stained, probably over pale grey flint. The general condition is lightly rolled (see sketch). 600,00…

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Published
Lower Paleolithic Flint handaxe (dimensions 117 x 78 x 32mm) Cordate handaxe, with almost plano-convex section, in black flint (as shown by minor recent damage) with strongly contrasting patinations on the two faces - the convex face is patinated and stained brown, the almost flat face has a marked cream and pale grey patina ("toad belly"). Both faces are finished by shallow invasive flaking (soft hammer), with the planar face also having almost continuous finer edge retouch, in places giving a step-flaked edge. Lower Palaeolithic (700,000 - 180,000 years before present).
