Object type: FABRICATOR
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age fabricator (length 46mm). This delicately formed flint tool would probably have been used for fine pressure flaking of small flint artefacts such as arrowheads. It is itself was prepared by and shaped by pressure flaking and form the technique employed it can probably be dated to the Beaker period, c.2300 – c. 1700 BC.

Probable Neolithic oval tertiary flake of smokey brownish flint with some edge damage but probably deliberate fine steep retouch around the distal end. The retouch is semi-abrupt and suggests possible use as a scraper.

Neolithic polished flint axe (160 x 52 x 30mm). Polish is confined to one face and is mainly at the cutting end. The other face is wholly flaked. The part polished face is a relatively coarse grained pale grey flint with some evidence of darker but patinated flint at the lateral edges and the pointed butt. The flaked face is of darker and more glossy flint and carries a small area of thin weathered cortex. It is patinated bluish white, and like the opposed face, has some spotty iron staining. There is some recent damage at the cutting edge. The lateral edges are undulating and visibly…

Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead (incomplete). Both barbs and tang broken off from this small arrowhead. Both faces are retouched periferally, with relatively steep retouch on the dorsal face of the blank (which has a trace of residual cortex) and more shallow invasive flaking on the ventral face. The arrowhead is unpatinated and made from a brownish translucent flint. (Beaker period) 2300-1700 BC.

2 Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age flint scrapers: a) Rounded distal end on a thin secondary flake (c.80% cortex) with small crushed platform. Additional ventral retouch on the proximal half of the right edge and retouch on the medial part of the left edge. Length 56mm, smoky grey glossy flint, struck from a pebble. b) Rounded end and both sides on a small oval tertiary flake of brownish grey flint. Relatively large plain platform. Late Neolithic probable polished stone axe (incomplete): Slightly tapering segment of a carefully polished ‘bar’ of reddish brown granular stone (probably quartzite) with an oval cross section (maximum 49mm x 31mm). Both ends have transverse breaks but at the slightly narrower end there is a trace of polished surface which suggests a rounded end (probable butt). While the other end may have had a cutting edge, it would seem unsuitable as a working tool since the relatively coarse grain would give a brittleness (a probable line of weakness can be seen at the middle edge of the seg…

Neolithic Flaked Axe in pale grey flint (dark grey near cortex). One face flaked overall, the other carrying about 50% thin pebble cortex, with flaking only at the butt end(narrow and rounded) and along the broad cutting edge. The completely flaked face has sparse spotty iron staining while the partly cortical face has streaky iron marks, probably fom agricultural implements. It is unusual to find axes with such large areas of cortex remaining and it may be that the axe is unfinished. Dimensions 112 x 62 x 19mm.
