Description: Post-medieval find of 6 gold and 959 silver coins, range 1550-c.1642 Total face value of group at time of deposit: £43 17s.6d. Discussion The 1029 coins from Powerstock are all of good gold (22 carats fine) or of sterling silver (over 90% fine metal).  They are all English, without the Irish and Scottish element which is often a feature of large Civil War hoards, perhaps suggesting an unusual level of selection. The earliest coins are from Edward VI’s Third Period, 1550-3, along with two coins of Philip and Mary. Otherwise all coins are of Elizabeth I (…

Two gold coins found c. 150m apart. Both are early issues of Edward III, a leopard issued in 1344 and a noble issued in 1351-2. Catalogue 1. Gold leopard (half-florin) of Edward III, third coinage period, issued Jan to July 1344. North 1106. Found doubled (folded in half). Weight 3.51g. 2. Gold noble of Edward III, fourth coinage, pre-Treaty Series C, issued 1351-2. North 1144. Found doubled (folded in half). Weight 7.69g. 2019 T715 Topcliffe, North Yorkshire (SWYOR-514873) I have examined a group of 53 coins reported found at Topcliffe, North Yorkshire.  The find consists of 51 silver pennies of the English kings Edward I and Edward II, with the latest coins dating class 14 of the series, issued c. 1317-20, and two of the contemporary Scottish coinage in the name of Alexander III.  All these were struck to a standard of over 90% fine metal and would easily have been in circulation together in England in the decade or so after 1317.  They are all full pennies, with none of the halfpennies…

A Post Medieval gold coin fragment; probably a couronne of Philip IV of Spain, as ruler of the Spanish Netherlands (AD 1621-65); the earliest issue of this coin was dated 1622 (Brussels) and the latest 1657 (Antwerp). Less than an eighth of the coin survives. The coin fragment is 12.4mm long, 7.6mm wide and 0.6mm thick. 0.39g. The diameter could have been about 30mm. A group of fused coins from Scaftworth, Nottinghamshire. There appears to be eight coins of the same denomination included, all silver halfpennies, probably of Elizabeth I, since the two visible sides are from this reign. As silver coins, they would be of the sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. The weight of the group is 1.92g (0.2g would be a good weight for a single specimen of this coin). Under Elizabeth, halfpennies were only struck from 1583, so the group would have been deposited after that date. It is very hard to say how long after that date this might have occurred, si…

I have examined two coins found in August 2004, and delivered to the British Museum on 15 March 2005. The coins consist of two silver pennies of Alexander III, king of Scotland, from his second coinage, issued between 1280 and about 1286. The Scottish coinage at this time followed the standards of the English coinage, so the coins will have a silver content equivalent to the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. Although the two coins survive in fragmentary from, this presumably occurred during their time in the ground, since they do not seem particularly worn by long circulation. B…

A coin hoard comprising of seventy-seven silver coins, dating from Edward I to Henry VI, dating to the period around AD 1430. Description: I have examined a group of 77 coins found in September 2004. The cloins are all of silver and all but one are official issues of the kinds of England, and thus will be of the traditional sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. The one non-English coin is continental sterling imitation, one of many issued by rulers to resemble English pennies of the late 13th to mid 14th century: Valeran of Ligny's output was probably from the 1310s-20s, and this coi…

I have examined ten coins reported found near Stowe. The first batch of five coins was found on 13 November 2004 and formed the subject of an earlier version of this reported dated 17 December 2004. Before the find reached the stage of inquest, a further find of coins on the site, made on 25 March 2005, was reported and these have now been incorporated into this amended report. The coins are all official English silver issues of the later 16th and 17th century and are thus of sterling standard of 92.5% fine metal. The details of the coins are as follows (the most recently-found coins …

Treasure Case : 2016 T728. I have examined a fused group of coins reported found at Calton Huswaithe, North Yorkshire. The group appears to consist of eight silver pennies and the weight, 12.7g, would appear to support this suggested number. Only one of the coins has a face that is clear, as the coin on the other end of the pile seems to have become pitted and illegible. The visible side shows the reverse of a penny of the mint of London from the coinage struck under Edward I-III, c. 1279-1333. The standard of the silver coinage at this time was over 90% fine metal. Since these …

I have examined a group of 10 coins reported found at Winterborne St Martin. All are official silver coins of Queen Elizabeth I and will be of the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. The group consists of just two of the silver denominations then in currency, the sixpence and threepence, so clearly represents selected material. The latest clearly dated coin is from 1575, so it appears the group was deposited in the mid to late 1570s. A silver grosso issued by the government of the city of Rome (still formally called the Senate), between the mid-13th and mid-14th centuries. Originally of over 90% silver, the coin has been gilded and then been completely converted into a brooch by the addition of a catchment and pin (the latter is now detached from the rest of the object). The weight of the object in its current state (including the detached pin) is 4.21g (an unaltered coin would weigh about 3.3-3.4g). I have examined three coins reported found in the Great Dunmow area, Essex. The coins are all gold quarter-nobles of King Edward III and will therefore be over 23 carats fine, or about 96% good gold. The quarter-noble was the smallest of the three gold denominations of later medieval English currency, worth 1s.8d. (20-pence), so three were worth 60-pence, or five shillings. Their details are as follows: Edward III Third Coinage, second issue (1346-51) Quarter-noble North 1112 2.10g (JL) Quarter-noble North 1112 …

Two gold nobles of late medieval England and will be of very high gold fineness - over 23 carats. Their details are as follows: Henry VI Noble Annulet issue (1422-late 1420s) London 6.99g Noble Annulet issue (1422-late 1420s) London 6.99g The noble was the highest denomination between 1344 and 1460, being worth 6s.8d., or 80 pennies (a third of a pound), so in terms of face value these three coins were worth 13s.4d. or one mark in the other medieval unit of account, which was equivalent to something like £300 in purchasing power in modern terms. ~~The following is the treasure report written by Dr Barrie J. Cook I have examined a group of 468 silver objects reported found at Littledean, Gloucestershire. The objects are clippings, material clipped or sheared from the edges of coins. Coin clipping was a long-standing abuse of precious metal coinage in Britain (and elsewhere) and in the medieval and early modern periods was regarded as a major abuse, often linked with counterfeiting, and similarly subject to capital punishment. Description The clippings in this group come from three identifiable groups of coins from the 16th a…
