Description: Post-medieval find of 6 gold and 959 silver coins, range 1550-c.1642 Total face value of group at time of deposit: £43 17s.6d. Discussion The 1029 coins from Powerstock are all of good gold (22 carats fine) or of sterling silver (over 90% fine metal).  They are all English, without the Irish and Scottish element which is often a feature of large Civil War hoards, perhaps suggesting an unusual level of selection. The earliest coins are from Edward VI’s Third Period, 1550-3, along with two coins of Philip and Mary. Otherwise all coins are of Elizabeth I (…

2019 T715 Topcliffe, North Yorkshire (SWYOR-514873) I have examined a group of 53 coins reported found at Topcliffe, North Yorkshire.  The find consists of 51 silver pennies of the English kings Edward I and Edward II, with the latest coins dating class 14 of the series, issued c. 1317-20, and two of the contemporary Scottish coinage in the name of Alexander III.  All these were struck to a standard of over 90% fine metal and would easily have been in circulation together in England in the decade or so after 1317.  They are all full pennies, with none of the halfpennies…

A group of fused coins from Scaftworth, Nottinghamshire. There appears to be eight coins of the same denomination included, all silver halfpennies, probably of Elizabeth I, since the two visible sides are from this reign. As silver coins, they would be of the sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. The weight of the group is 1.92g (0.2g would be a good weight for a single specimen of this coin). Under Elizabeth, halfpennies were only struck from 1583, so the group would have been deposited after that date. It is very hard to say how long after that date this might have occurred, si…

I have examined two coins found in August 2004, and delivered to the British Museum on 15 March 2005. The coins consist of two silver pennies of Alexander III, king of Scotland, from his second coinage, issued between 1280 and about 1286. The Scottish coinage at this time followed the standards of the English coinage, so the coins will have a silver content equivalent to the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. Although the two coins survive in fragmentary from, this presumably occurred during their time in the ground, since they do not seem particularly worn by long circulation. B…

Treasure Case : 2016 T728. I have examined a fused group of coins reported found at Calton Huswaithe, North Yorkshire. The group appears to consist of eight silver pennies and the weight, 12.7g, would appear to support this suggested number. ~~The following is the treasure report written by Dr Barrie J. Cook I have examined a group of 468 silver objects reported found at Littledean, Gloucestershire. The objects are clippings, material clipped or sheared from the edges of coins. Description The clippings in this group come from three identifiable groups of coins from the 16th a…

I have examined a group of 18 coins and a silver fragment reported found near Halesworth, Suffolk. Seventeen of the coins are silver issues of the medieval kings of England and will thus be of the official sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. The remaining coin is a sterling imitation from Hainaut. Analyses of these coins shows a range of fineness, but always over 60% silver and the majority are well over 80% fine. Three denominations are present: the groat (4-pence), half-groat (2-pence) and penny. The oldest coin present dates to the 1280s and the latest identifiable one to th…

REPORT TO HM CORONER 2011 T184 Winterborne Kingston, Dorset I have examined a group of 83 items reported found at Winterborne Kingston, Dorset. The majority are official silver coins of the kings of England Edward I, Edward II and Edward III, along with two coins of King David II of Scots. In addition there is a single silver coin of King Henry IV, struck after the introduction of a new weight standard for the coinage in 1412 All these coins would have been struck to the current sterling standard, thus over 90% fine metal. With the coins was a lead bulla, or seal, of Pope Bo…

Treasure case: 2013 T288 North Tawton, Devon PAS Database number: DEV-A98913 This find consists of seven medieval silver coins, certainly or probably from the 14th century; five are English and two Scottish, and thus all will have been struck to the sterling silver standard of the time of over 90% fine metal. The find includes two pennies surviving from the very large penny coinage of the decades around 1300, with the other coins being the larger denominations of groat (4-pence) and half-groat introduced in 1351 in England and 1357 in Scotland. The latest coins present date t…

The coins consist of a single item and two fused groups, of six and four coins respectively. The coins all appear to be silver and five of them can be examined in reasonable detail: the loose coin and the four end coins of the two fused groups. All these belong to the English Short Cross coinage (1180-1247) and it is reasonable to assume that the whole group consists of coins of this type. Given this, they would therefore consist of over 90% fine silver. Their details are as follows. Separate coin Class 7a3 (c. 1220-1222) Terri, London TERRIONLVND 1.41g Fused group 1 (6 co…

I have examined a group of coins reported found at Creslow, Buckinghamshire, on 24 August 2003. Fifty-six coins were initially submitted, and a further three coins were subsequently sent to me by one of the three named finders, giving a total of 59. Fifty-eight of the coins submitted form a coherent group, and can be said to represent material from English currency of the early to mid fourteenth century. The remaining coin (one of the three submitted separately) is a silver penny of Henry VI, issued in the 1450s, a century or so after the latest coin in the rest of the group. It is …

I have examined 12 silver coins reported found on farmland near High Wycombe . The coins are all official English coins, but consist of two groups: 11 English Short Cross pennies from the late 12th century, and a silver half-groat of Elizabeth I, initial mark 1 (1601-2). There is no way that the latter coin could have mixed in currency with the others found, and it must be a separate loss, deposited in the early 17th century: it must, therefore, be regarded as an individually-lost piece, and thus not eligible to be considered as Treasure. The 11 remaining coins are all silver pennie…

TREASURE CASE 2012 T858: Hoard of silver coin clippings. BM Curator Report: I have examined a group of 48 items. All are silver clippings taken from definite or probable English silver coins from the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I and will thus be of over 90% fine metal. The majority of the clippings are definitely from silver shillings and it is likely that all of them are from this one denomination. The latest datable objects are two fragments of shillings of the triangle in circle initial mark, in use at the English mint in the years 1641-3. The details of the clip…
