There appears to be eight coins of the same denomination included, all silver halfpennies, probably of Elizabeth I, since the two visible sides are from this reign. I have examined two coins found in August 2004, and delivered to the British Museum on 15 March 2005. The coins consist of two silver pennies of Alexander III, king of Scotland, from his second coinage, issued between 1280 and about 1286. The Scottish coinage at this time followed the standards of the English coinage, so the coins will have a silver content equivalent to the sterling standard, 92.5% fine metal. I have examined a group of 18 coins and a silver fragment reported found near Halesworth, Suffolk. Seventeen of the coins are silver issues of the medieval kings of England and will thus be of the official sterling standard, over 90% fine metal. The remaining coin is a sterling imitation from Hainaut. Analyses of these coins shows a range of fineness, but always over 60% silver and the majority are well over 80% fine. The coins consist of a single item and two fused groups, of six and four coins respectively. The coins all appear to be silver and five of them can be examined in reasonable detail: the loose coin and the four end coins of the two fused groups. I have examined a group of coins reported found at Creslow, Buckinghamshire, on 24 August 2003. Fifty-six coins were initially submitted, and a further three coins were subsequently sent to me by one of the three named finders, giving a total of 59. Fifty-eight of the coins submitted form a coherent group, and can be said to represent material from English currency of the early to mid fourteenth century. I have examined 12 silver coins reported found on farmland near High Wycombe . The coins are all official English coins, but consist of two groups: 11 English Short Cross pennies from the late 12th century, and a silver half-groat of Elizabeth I, initial mark 1 (1601-2). There is no way that the latter coin could have mixed in currency with the others found, and it must be a separate loss, deposited in the early 17th century: it must, therefore, be regarded as an individually-lost piece, and thus not eligible to be considered as Treasure.
