The find consists of silver coins, all of the English Short Cross coinage, in use between 1180 and 1247. The coins in the find are mostly pennies with some cut halfpennies, although several are fragmentary and there are some smaller fragments which cannot be positively identified, except to say that they were originally Short Cross pennies. The coins examined consist of 32 whole or fragmentary pennies and 6 cut halfpennies, along with 5 fragments of coins, so the original group would have had a face value of at least 3 shillings, with a purchasing power of something like £50-100…

Post-medieval coin hoard from Newton-with-Scales, Lancashire (2004T30) I have examined a group of coins reported found at Newton with Scales in January 2004. The coins are all official English issues of the traditional sterling standard, i.e. 92/5% fine metal.The coins consist of three denominations: 11 groats (fourpences) of Mary and Elizabeth Tudor, and a sixpence and 7 threepences of Elizabeth, amounting to a sum with a face value of five shillings and fivepence, which would be something like £20-30 in modern terms.The coins would certainly have circulated together, and the lim…
