Treasure Case : 2016 T728. I have examined a fused group of coins reported found at Calton Huswaithe, North Yorkshire. The group appears to consist of eight silver pennies and the weight, 12.7g, would appear to support this suggested number. Only one of the coins has a face that is clear, as the coin on the other end of the pile seems to have become pitted and illegible. The visible side shows the reverse of a penny of the mint of London from the coinage struck under Edward I-III, c. 1279-1333. The standard of the silver coinage at this time was over 90% fine metal. Since these …

Treasure case : 2005 T386 This hoard consists of 37 coins and fragments. All are silver and official issues of the kings of England and (in one case) Scotland and thus have a fineness of the sterling standard: 92.5% fine metal. TREASURE CASE : 2006 T354. Seven official silver coins of fifteenth-century English kings. As such they will have been struck to the traditional sterling standard of 92.5% fine metal. The coins consist of six groats (the fourpenny coin) and a penny (a detailed list is attached), and thus had a total face value at the time of their use of 2 shillings and one penny, a sum that would correspond to something like £30 or £40 in modern terms (insofar as such equivalences can be made). The groat was the highest-value silver coin then in use: higher values were available in gold, but …

TREASURE CASE : 2006 T356 Two silver halfpennies of King Henry VI, from the Annulet issue (dated 1422-7) and struck at the mint of Calais. As official issues of the English mint system, the coins will be of the traditional sterling standard of 92.5% fine metal. Since this find consisted of two coins of good silver, there is a potential case of Treasure to be addressed. Halfpennies of Henry VI of this issue, especially from the productive mint of Calais, are not particularly rare as single finds. However, it would be unlikely for two such coins, from the same issue, and in a si…

Treasure Trove case: 2006 T115 Five silver coins found during World War II. The coins are all thalers of the 17th century and were produced in the Holy Roman Empire. As such, they will be made of good silver, certainly over 90% fine. They all have similar loops attached to them, to suggest that they had formed all or part of a piece of decorative jewellery. The loops are attached so that at least one side of each coin is displayed upright. The details of the coins are as follows. 1. Thaler of Johann Georg I, elector of Saxony, and August of Saxe-Naumberg (1611-15), dated 16…
