Two gold nobles of late medieval England and will be of very high gold fineness - over 23 carats. Their details are as follows: Henry VI Noble Annulet issue (1422-late 1420s) London 6.99g Noble Annulet issue (1422-late 1420s) London 6.99g The noble was the highest denomination between 1344 and 1460, being worth 6s.8d., or 80 pennies (a third of a pound), so in terms of face value these three coins were worth 13s.4d. or one mark in the other medieval unit of account, which was equivalent to something like £300 in purchasing power in modern terms. There were weight reforms …

I have examined a group of coins reported found at Creslow, Buckinghamshire, on 24 August 2003. Fifty-six coins were initially submitted, and a further three coins were subsequently sent to me by one of the three named finders, giving a total of 59. Fifty-eight of the coins submitted form a coherent group, and can be said to represent material from English currency of the early to mid fourteenth century. The remaining coin (one of the three submitted separately) is a silver penny of Henry VI, issued in the 1450s, a century or so after the latest coin in the rest of the group. It is …

I have examined 12 silver coins reported found on farmland near High Wycombe . The coins are all official English coins, but consist of two groups: 11 English Short Cross pennies from the late 12th century, and a silver half-groat of Elizabeth I, initial mark 1 (1601-2). There is no way that the latter coin could have mixed in currency with the others found, and it must be a separate loss, deposited in the early 17th century: it must, therefore, be regarded as an individually-lost piece, and thus not eligible to be considered as Treasure. The 11 remaining coins are all silver pennie…

A silver penny of Henry V (Type G) dating to the period AD 1413 to 1422 with a mullet to the left of crown and probably a trefoil to the right of crown, minted at the ecclesiastical mint of York. Both Barrie Cook and Carl Savage have noted that this coin is odd because the obverse legend ends in FRAN and normally Henry V pence have the legend hENRIC [DI GRA] REX ANGLIE. This coin reads as +h[EnRIC REX AN]GL Z FRAN. [CIVI/TAS]/EBO/RA[CI] is the rev legend

I have examined 15 coins and images of four more reported found at Wendover, Buckinghamshire, 19 in total. All but one are silver pennies of the kings of England and would thus have had a fineness of about 92% silver. The remaining coin is an issue of the English kings from Ireland, of the same standard. All but one of the English coins belong to the Short Cross coinage, in production between AD 1180 and 1247. The remaining coin is a penny of Edward I, issued in AD 1280-1. Between the issue of this coin and the others, there were two wholesale national re-coinages (in AD 1247 and 1279…

'This coin is a counterfeit London mint penny of Edward I. It looks quite base and the style is dreadful. It is a proper, private enterprise counterfeit, not a foreign imitation, and probably had a silver wash making it a bit more convincing. It was probably made and used in the late 13th-mid 14th century' Barrie Cook, British Museum Dept of Coins & Medals to whom the recorder is indebted.
