Iron hammer head of probable Early Medieval or Medieval date. Rectangular section 14.8 x 12.8 thinning to form a flat sectioned (16.0 x 7.7mm) pane, the transition being marked by a tight curve behind the eye. The eye is oval, 13.0 x 7.2mm, The iron is exfoliating. Length 76.0mm, Mass 57.02g. Iron tools are difficult to date but this hammer can be compared to examples from Old Saram, Wiltshire, dated to the 11th century and Wintringham, Cambridgeshire, early 14th century (Goodall 2011, Fig. 2.5, Nos 32 and 33). It can also be compared to hammers from the Tattershall Thorpe, Lincoln…

Iron bar on the end of which is a conical, copper alloy, finial. Corrosion makes it impossible to determine the original section of the bar which may have been circurlar or square, it now measures 8.5mm, The finial has a maximum diameter of 6.4mm. Where the finial meets the iron bar is a low, 2.5mm wide collar. Next to this is 1.0 mm wide, plain band which appears to be of a different alloy to the rest of the terminal, copper rather than brass coloured. Two circumferential grooves surround the finial, giving the effect of three rings. The finial narrows towards its tip on which is an …

Post Medieval cannon ball, or ball from ball mill. Cast iron with a diameter ranging between 83.6mm and 80.5mm (c. 3.3 inches. The ball weighs 1997.1g (4.4 pounds) and fails to fit into any of the accepted calibres for Civil War, or later ordnance hence the suggestion that it may have come from a ball mill. This might be supported by its lack of symmetry. A ball mill consisted of a horizontal, revolving drum which contained iron balls. As the cylinder turned the constantly falling balls pulverised material placed in the drum. Ball mills were used in the preparated of powders for makin…

While corroded the weapon is in good condition although the blade is slightly bent and the socket has suffered some recent damage being found separately and re-attached. An iron spearhead of Early Anglo-Saxon date. Kevin Leahy comments: "With its open socket and an angled blade which is disproportionally longer than the socket this spear fits into Swanton (1973) Group E1. Swanton feels this Group is early and didn't find any that could be dated as late as the sixth century. I would be more cautious and say fifth-early sixth century." The spear, which is now in poor condition, measures 210mm long and 46mm wide. In cross section the socket has two almost straight sides, the others being rounded.
