County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy scale balance beam fragment. Cast square section bar with a rounded knop at one end, a step at the other broken end, and a graduated scale incised as regular grooves along one side; the source record holds this to be decorative while this reporter would deem it functional, permitting adjustment of the balance when in use and perhaps implying operation in the manner of a steelyard with a re-positionable poise. Anglo-Scandinavian. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950 Length: 75.9mm, Width: 3mm, Thickness: 2.8mm, Weight: 5.16gms

Copper alloy and iron mount fragment. A fragment of cast copper alloy with straight edges and ends and retaining substantial rusted iron accretions, inluding a bolt or fixing, and staining from the apparent loss of another. The object is twisted and torn as if by rough removal from its setting. The display side bears a wandering interlaced ladder-pattern crudely incised; the source record identifies this as Viking-Age. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-900. Length: 39.9mm, Width: 22.4mm, Thickness: 0.9mm, Weight: 6.82gms

Copper alloy possible finger ring fragment. Cast – source record suggests sheet metal but the photographs appear to depict a casting - rectangular billet, curled in the manner of part of a finger ring with ring and dot stamped on its band. Lead and iron pin fragment. Cast wheel-headed lead pin head with two cross arms at right angles and raised bosses where they meet the circumference, with stub of an iron shank. The corrosion of the shank within the pin head has resulted in extruded corrosion on one side of the latter. Copper alloy strap slide. The source record advances a possible Viking affinity, noting the object is ribbed though it lacks ring and dot decoration. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000 Length: 16.6mm, Width: 11.1mm, Thickness: 6.9mm, Weight: 1.09gms

Copper alloy and iron pin head. Cast globular copper alloy pin head with protruding knops overall retaining a collar at the rust-stained site of an iron shank which is otherwise lost to decay. Copper alloy probable pin fragment. The larger part of the head of a disc-headed pin [DH] or possibly a decorated tag [MF] with multiple stamped ring and dot on its display side; the identification may be rendered debateable by the appearance of a short sharp hook on the back. Dave Haldenby kindly notes this is a type present on several Middle Saxon sites in East Yorkshire. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy strap end. A plain narrow straight-sided slightly tapered bar or plate with a pair of rounded terminal rivets passing through its concave butt end, the ends of the rivets being burred. The lack of decoration leaves this object outside Thomas’s typology, which expressly excludes the plain strap ends accompanying his more diagnostic types. At the Castledyke cemetery, North Lincolnshire, narrow buckles and straps were a feature of 7th-century furnished burials when they [rarely] appeared, so a continuation of the narrow-strap style seems credible in a predominantly Midd…

County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Cast sub-trapezoid plate with three slightly concave sides and a button stud projecting from the centre of its plain back. The display side retains a double linear border which has trapped relicts of presumably formerly more extensive gilding. The finder suggests this might be a fragment of an 8th-century chip carved pin and posits a possible reuse as Viking or Anglo-Scandinavian ‘hack’ – a fragment intended for reuse. Copper alloy unidentified object fragment. Copper alloy sleeve clasp fragment. Cast rectangular plate or bar with five rounded scallops along its inner edge, the outermost drilled as attachment points and the rest each with a small blind pit drilled centrally. The outer part oi – or appears to be – thickened with diagonal grooves along its length. There is no hook or eye – whichever it was is now lost. Hines form B20.
