A fragment of thin copper-alloy sheet, now roughly square (42 x 32.5 x 0.7 mm), with three of its four edges broken. The fragment is curved, and if the curve were extended, it would give a maximum diameter of 120 mm. The upper edge is the only original edge, and this is undecorated; below, the strip is decorated with repoussé dots arranged in pairs. There is a horizontal line of paired dots below the rim, and what is probably a lattice design below this. The dots are convex on the exterior and concave on the reverse. The surface has traces of a dark green patina. At first, the …

The whistle is made from a cast tube of copper alloy. Towards one terminal is a semi-circular hole which is obliquely angled in profile to provide a lip which would give the whistle's sound. The surface of the whistle is corroded and encrusted, with small areas of a mid green patina. It is 31.1mm in length, 7.2mm in diameter, and weighs 3.92g. No parallel has been found for a copper alloy whistle of this type, but bone whistles of similar size and shape are illustrated in Margeson 1993 and Egan 1998. These are dated broadly to the medieval to post-medieval periods, 13th to 17th century.

The object is a whetstone or hone. Ward-Perkins (Ward-Perkins J.B. 1940 Medieval Catalogue, Museum of London.) comments whetstones or hones are not usually found on Prehistoric or Roman sites in Britain, therefore suggesting the objects date from the later Early Medieval period onwards. The hole on the recorded example appears to have been hand-made, and therefore is not likely to be of recent date. The whetstone or hone is made from a fine grained stone, possibly a micaceous schist. It is rectangular in plan with both narrow edges being broken. It varies in thickness, to a maxim…
