Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: A rectangular strip of silver, broken diagonally at both ends; both of the breaks are fresh and irregular. The long edges of the front of the plate are decorated with punched triangles, but the surface is very worn and the decoration is now almost invisible. The reverse is undecorated. The strip is 8.6mm wide and 13.7mm in surviving length; it is 1.0mm thick. It weighs 0.7g Discussion: This fragment is of early-medieval date. Although it was found near an early Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery, it is more likely to be part of a Viking-age finger-ring, similar to a sta…

Description: A semi-circular fragment of silver plate of uncertain function. The fragment is an irregular semi-circular shape with one straight edge thickened, and the other edges very thin and with hammer marks. The centre of the front is decorated with five small punched triangular shapes set in a row, flanked on either side by three fine grooves; the right-hand group of three grooves is overlain by another oblique groove which looks like an error. The reverse is undecorated. It measures 11.5mm parallel to the straight edge and 7.6mm perpendicular to it; it is a maximum of 1.5mm thi…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire

Description: A complete cast gilded silver mount, apparently complete. The mount is roughly lozengiform or kite-shaped, with a flat, undecorated reverse and two perforations, perhaps for attachment. The front is decorated with softly contoured relief ornament which is hard to decode; in fact, it is difficult to decide which way up the object should be held. It may be interpreted as a forward-facing seated figure. At the top (the narrower end of the object) is what appears to be an animal head seen from the top, with a wide snout and large oval eyes. Two worn projections to the top …

A fragment from an Early-Medieval copper alloy cruciform or small-long brooch, dating from 450-550 AD. This fragment includes a tiny part of the flat head of the brooch which has broken off millimetres above the curving bow. The upper end of the bow has a raised flat-topped T-shaped detail. There is a diamond-shaped notch cut into either end of the horizontal bar of the T. The stem of the T tapers and runs into the ridge which run down the centre of the bow. The bow is heavily arched and broken part was along its length. Looking at the reverse shows the bow to be very concave. B…

A complete cast high tin copper alloy sword pommel of early-medieval date. The pommel is ovoid in plan, hemispherical in elevation, and hollow on the underside. Both outer faces are decorated with triple raised arches extending outward slightly from the plain of the pommel. This feature is flanked by three double incised grooves. There are no obvious means of attachment though a small patch of material within the recess on the base of the object may represent the remains of cement used to fix the piece onto the tang. Parallels for this pommel have been provided by Nation Finds Advis…

A copper-alloy object made from cut metal, probably a Medieval balance pan, circa AD1200-1500. An alternative identification has been put forward suggesting it is a possible decorative spangle of Anglo-Saxon date . The object is incomplete but was originally sub-triangular in shape. It is now missing a corner. Each of the remaining two corners are pierced for attachment or suspension and the remains of a further perforation are visible at the edge of the break. The object has small punched circular decoration on one side which appears to be irregular and not representative of a…

Circular domed object made from gold, consisting of a circular back sheet, an incomplete filigree collar, and a domed upper sheet. The back sheet is 13.0mm in diameter and was probably originally flat; it is now very slightly concave, around a flat rim underneath the narrow flange running around the domed upper sheet. There are several small indentations, as if the back sheet has been poked repeatedly by a sharp point. There is one tiny circular hole close to the edge and, directly opposite and close to the edge, a tear perhaps through a second hole. The surviving hole is c. 0.6mm in …

A copper alloy double-terminal bit link which would have been attached to the terminal loop of a late early-medieval bridle bit. It has the following dimensions: length: 51.3mm; width: 17.9mm; thickness: 6.9mm; weight: 15.87g. The artefact has an integral expanded plate with a D-shaped cross section.
