Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Description: Gold finger-ring with rectangular bezel and large, weighty hoop. The hoop is bent slightly out of shape, and now measures approximately 25.3mm from the top of the bezel to the back of the hoop, and 26.6mm perpendicular to this. The internal dimensions are approximately 20 x 22mm and the ring weighs 20.10g. The bezel measures 12.5mm wide and 14.4mm long, and is 2.2mm thick; it is decorated with a grooved border, and in the bottom of the groove are deeper dots. There are 21 dots across the top of the rectangular panel, 23 down each of the long sides, and 24 across the bo…

Gold fitting decorated with filigree and enamel, in the shape of a stylus eraser, possibly from a styliform pin. It is basically a hollow cone, now flattened to become triangular, and open at both ends; at the narrower end there is an oval aperture measuring 5 x 2 mm, surrounded by a plain square-section wire. At the wider end it is squashed flatter, especially in the middle, but both ends are slightly rounded. This end does not have a corresponding wire around it. Each face, front and reverse, is decorated with a double border of two twisted wires around a trapezoidal panel. The pane…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy late medieval buckle. When complete, this buckle would have been formed from a large open sub-square frame with central pin bar, with gently inward curving sides and ends (essentially making them concave), with an integral quatrefoil at each corner. What remains of the example recorded here is one side of the frame with two complete quatrefoils. The surviving bar of the frame is domed in section, having a flat reverse and is now bent into an L shape with an internal angle of approximately 100 degrees. Extending from beneath one quatrefoil is a tiny section …

Fragment of a once circular, copper alloy openwork object with a flanged edge to its reverse. The object is now subtriangular in plan. It is decorated on the front face with silver sheet representing a dog-like animal, possibly in the Jellinge style. There is beaded silver sheet around the edge of what was once an openwork perforation. The copper alloy portion of the object is abraded with little of the original surface remaining. It now has a bright, mid green patina. It is probably 10th century in date.It is 21.3mm long, 15.66mm wide, 3,82mm thick and weighs 5.16g.

Incomplete bone pin. The shaft of the pin is circular in section and truncated before the point. The pinhead is a circular disc, set on the same plane (i.e. on end, not set transverse to the top of the shaft). Beneath the circular head are there integrally carved bands. The head is decorated to either side with eight incised rings and dots set around a central ring and dot. The object is abraded. The original surface survives with a brown patina, whilst exposed surfaces are creamier. The break edge is worn smooth suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. Helen Geake kindly pointed out …

Incomplete copper alloy buckle, probably medieval. This buckle frame is trapezoidal in plan. The two sidebars of the frame are rectangular in section. Placed approximately one third along each arm is an integral semicircular flange with a circular perforation, presumably so that a bar could be fixed between the two opposing sides of the frame. The front bar of the frame is flattened and decorated with six transverse grooves. The back bar is similarly flattened but undecorated. The reverse of the buckle is plain. The pin is missing. Tiny early Anglo-Saxon buckle, made from copper alloy. The frame is oval, and measures just 12 mm long and 15.5 mm wide. It is circular in cross-section, now rather corroded but perhaps originally 2 mm in diameter. The copper-alloy pin survives, with the loop wrapped around the frame and the tip of the pin curving neatly around the outer edge. Two hinge loops made from copper-alloy sheet are corroded around the frame, and this is all that survives of an original plate. th eobject weighs 0.25g. This type of buckle is most common in the seventh and early eighth centuries c.600-720AD. …

Head and part of shaft from a pin of Cool’s type 18, probably made from jet. The head is in the shape of a human head, roughly triangular in cross-section with a broad back to the head and a sharply pointed nose and chin. The chin is jutting, with a straight groove above for the mouth; a ridge above forms the upper lip, and above this is a short but prominent vertical ‘Roman’ nose. A solid brow ridge runs from the nose to the hair. Above is a quiff-like hairstyle which curves down the back of the pinhead. The hair is decorated with oblique grooves either side of a central ve…

Three lead-alloy rings, all 21-22 mm in diameter. All have roughly circular or oval cross-sections; two are more chunky, about 3.5 mm in cross-section, and one is slimmer, 2-2.5 mm in cross-section. Lead-alloy rings of the chunky shape, but only 15 mm in diameter, are identified by Egan and Pritchard, Dress accessories, as early 15th-century shoe-buckles (1991, 62-4). Lead alloy is not strong, and so may not be suitable for other heavier uses. Probably 1400-1450AD.

Fragment of one arm from a pair of tweezers. The fragment represents part of the tip of the arm, and although one corner is missing it can be seen that the tip was turned inwards, roughly at right angles, to provide a better grip. The fragment flares from a minimum of 14 mm wide at the broken top to 18 mm wide at the tip; it is 17 mm long and weighs 1.11g. The surface is very corroded, but a neat longitudinal row of seven small ring-and-dot motifs is visible down the centre, and a row of dots can just be seen down either edge. This decoration suggests a middle or late Anglo-Saxon d…

Most of a pair of tweezers, now in three pieces. The tips of the arms are now missing, and the tweezers are now a maximum of 6 mm wide. They taper evenly towards the expanded loop, which is 4 mm wide. A groove runs up either long side and over the loop, but there is no other decoration. The metal is an unusual grey/beige colour, which suggests a lead alloy, but the object is also rather light, which might perhaps suggest an alloy predominantly of tin. The broken edges are very fresh, but a darker brown colour which does not help in identifying the metal. The object has a surviving …

Unidentified object or possible hinge. Copper-alloy object, now rather corroded. It is basically flat and rectangular, 43 x 20 mm, and broken at one end. Hooked tag (probably). Triangular object made from copper-alloy sheet. Two edges are intact, running down to a broken apex; the top edge is broken. The metal thickens slightly towards the apex, and there is a pair of parallel grooves running not-quite-straight across just above the apex, which then begins to turn under away from the grooves. The top edge is broken in a series of sharp jagged angles, and there is no trace of sewing holes. A possible copper-alloy rivet does not appear on the reverse and so is probably just a strongly adhering fragment or thick corrosion bubble; ther…
