Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Finger ring dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, made from silver or another white metal with enamelled decoration. Although now incomplete and bent, it was clearly originally very small and quite flimsy. The hoop is missing a small part at its narrowest part, where it is 2.5mm wide and nor more than 0.8mm thick; the breaks appear fairly fresh. The hoop then flares gently in width to the shoulders, which expand and flatten to form a flat shield-shaped bezel. This is decorated with a shield of arms comprising three diagonal cells part-filled with decayed enamel, with an&…

A fragment of a white metal unidentified incomplete object of post-1912 date. This artefact has been looked at by National Finds Advisor Helen Geake & Judy Rudoe, Curator of the Modern Collections at the Department of Prehistory & Europe, British Museum but it has not been possible to determine what this fragment was a part of. This fragment is made of sheet white metal which has been curved to form a cylinder, the ends of which now overlap. It is probable that the ends originally butted together and now overlap as a result of this artefact having become squashed out of shape. Thi…

An unidentified object made from white metal (not necessarily silver) and probably incomplete. Machine punched so likely to be 19th century or more recent. This artefact has been looked at by National Finds Advisor Helen Geake & Judy Rudoe, Curator of the Modern Collections at the Department of Prehistory & Europe, British Museum. Following discussion the object is thought to be a possible decorative cover for a button, or possibly a cap, perhaps for a walking stick. Alternatively, perforations in the object suggest it could be the lid of a pepper or salt shaker. The object is den…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Kent

Description: Silver 'slip-knot' ring made of square-section wire (of side less than 0.5 mm). The ring is made from a doubled length of wire with three knots, one larger in the centre flanked by two smaller ones. The ring is now bent out of shape, and is oval. Dimensions: The ring measures 21 mm wide externally and 18 mm from the central knot to the back of the ring. The large central knot brings its thickness up to 6 mm. Discussion: This finger-ring is similar to KENT-697734 (2013T52) which was found through metal analysis to be made from sterling silver and therefore of mode…

Object type: DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Broad period: MODERN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Dress fastener of the type known as a 'cloak-clasp'. It is made of copper alloy with traces of a yellow-metal coating, and has an oval plate decorated with a relief lion's head. When held so that the lion's head is upright, the long axis of the oval is vertical. There is a rectangular loop to the right and a circular loop to the left; the circular loop is perpendicular to the rest of the object. The rectangular loop would have been sewn to one side of the garment, and an identical piece would have been sewn to the other side. One side would have had a short chain ending in a hook,…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MODERN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Very unusual copper-alloy buckle. The frame and plate are cast in one piece, and it is very thick and chunky. The frame is D-shaped, with an animal head at the pin rest. This has a pair of eyebrows which run downwards to form the nose; the nose ends in a large rounded knob. A knobby eye sits below each eyebrow. There do not appear to be any ears. A groove runs around the outer edge of the frame from the outside of each eyebrow and stops at the junction of the frame and plate. In the centre of this junction is a hole for the pin, which survives as a simple piece of strip cut to size an…

Possible fragment of purse frame. Now bent out of shape, causing stress to the metal, it appears originally to have been gently curved. It is L-shaped in cross-section, with one longer and thicker arm and one shorter slimmer one. From the edge of the longer thicker arm of the L there are three surviving projections, each 1 mm long and ending in a slightly burred-over edge. It is more usual to have sewing holes in the frame, and the metal has a crisp and in some ways modern appearance. If it is a purse frame, it should date to the late 15th or early 16th century (c. 1450-15…

Object type: RING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Small asymmetrical copper-alloy ring, 14 mm in diameter, with a 7 mm diameter perforation. The perforation is off-centre but the ring's section is always circular, swelling evenly from 2 mm diameter to 4 mm. Similar rings are known, mostly with deliberate neat holes which show that they are hollow and made from thin metal. They tend to be in good condition, many with obvious seams around the circumference, and a few have a yellow-metal coating or simple corrugated decoration. This one has no visible seam or holes and is in poor condition with a corroded but stable dark-brown surfac…
