A sherd from the body of an early Roman coarseware storage vessel. The sherd is only slightly curved in profile suggesting a large vessel. The fabric is hard and coarse and is tempered with sparse rounded quartz sand with many irregularly-shaped voids. The core is a reduced grey, the outer margins are bright orange with a dark grey outer surface and the inner surface is mid-brown.  Length: 86.35mm, width: 75.72mm, thickness: 13.97mm, weight: 96.89g

The four fragments of this object were found in March 2020 in close proximity, with a maximum gap of about 18m between them, by two detectorists carrying out a systematic survey on a Roman site that has evidence for a villa-type building in south-west Suffolk. The base from a Roman grayware (GX) wheelmade vessel. The fabric is light grey in colour with slightly oxidised outer surface and margin. It is tempered with plentiful fine mica, poorly sorted rounded and angular quarz (<2mm) and occasional small flint fragments (<1mm). The base and outer surface is sooted in places. The base has curved, parallel lines on its outer surface from where it was removed from the wheel. Judith Plouviez (per. com.) suggests that it may be of 2nd century or later date. A sherd of a Roman amphora. The sherd comes from the shoulder of a vessel and there is a break at one edge where a handle would have extended. It has a hard, smooth fabric with plentiful chalky (<2mm) and sparse mica inclusions (Aa). Both surfaces are an oxidised pale pink-orange in colour and the core is grey. One rim shard comes from a vessel with a very large diameter, probably a large dish or pancheon, the others are probably from jugs. A fragment of a Roman glass vessel. The fragment comes from the vessel's rim, which is broad with a narrow opening. Its profile, seen in the break, shows that it was formed from being folded outwards, upwards and then inwards again. The glass is a light blue-green in colour. Its size compared to the narrow opening suggests that it may have come from a small flask or bottle similar to the globular bath flasks discussed by Price and Cottam (1998, 188-90), which have been found in 1st to mid-3rd century contexts across England and Wales.
