A group of 70 roman vessel sherds from a limited area within a field known to have produced Iron Age and Roman material. Various pieces show signs of burning, some of which is quite intense. All of the diagnostic examples are 1st century AD in date, with nothing to suggest anything later than the mid-2nd century. 1) One rim and one body sherd of Roman or Late Iron Age grey wares (GX/BSW) with burnished exteriors. A small and worn copper alloy coin with uncertain obverse and reverse types. The thickness of the flan and the high relief of the surviving design elements suggest this is probably Iron Age rather than Roman in date. It may have originally been a piece from a Trinovantian/Catuvellaunian bronze unit, although no obvious type has been identified. Alternatively, it may be the core of a contemporary gold stater or quarter stater forgery, the L-shaped decoration visible on one of the faces might be similar to an uninscribed British O (Geometric) quarter stater, c.65-45 BC (as Hobbs nos. 410…

Stater of Icenian Norfolk Wolf type (left facing, British JB, Hobbs nos 227-249, VA610-3). Metal looks like silver but is thought to be very base gold. John Talbot comments further: "The reverse die is particularly interesting as it is one of a small group of dies, many of which are linked, which have additional ornamentation. The die in question has an S below the wolf, a triple dot design below the crescent and a diamond shaped design above the neck. There are over 70 reverse dies in the JB series, many of which are known from a small number or indeed a single example. There are 2 ot…

Iron Age silver large flan deeply-dished unit, of John Talbot LFC groups (Groups 1/2?). Early face-horse type, uninscribed East Anglian. Worn. John Talbot comments: I have re-looked at this coin and have now worked out that the obverse die is C - therefore it is a well known die link C 2 within the LFC group. You need to revolve the obverse image by about 210 degrees clockwise to make sense of it.
