Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An apparently incomplete iron unidentified object, perhaps a strap handle, found close to HAMP-537475 and therefore of possible early early-medieval date (500-700). The object is sub-rectangular in shape with concave long edges. One (apparently complete) short end measures 23.8mm wide and is max.10.6mm thick (though it is likely this is largely corrosion). The opposite short end appears to be incomplete and measures 16.9mm in max.width and 2.9mm in thickness. At the centre (the narrowest point) it measures 14.8mm wide and 4.7mm thick. Its cross-section appears to be rectangular. It su…

An incomplete early early-medieval (500-700) iron probable mount from a shield boss, found close to HAMP-537475. No original edge survives and the damage is relatively recent. One face is flat while the other has a worn, broken central projection, presumably a rivet attachment. It measures 19.1mm in length, 16.6mm in width, 6.6mm in max.thickness (without rivet projection, 2.8mm) and weighs 2.24g.

An incomplete early-medieval (500-700) iron shield boss of Hines (2013) Type 1, probably Type1a (SB1-a), with a badly damaged rim. No attachment rivets survive. The walls are concave and stand c.25mm in height, with a slight carination at the top at the join with the cone. The cone is straight-sided, its angle changing towards the centre where the (incomplete) projection extends, its terminal now missing. At its widest, the rim survives to a width of c.20mm, but no complete edge is in evidence. It is 4.1mm thick. The object measures 130.2mm in max.length, 124.7mm in max.width (p…

A collection of twelve iron objects (some of which may join) and two copper alloy objects, found together with fragments of bone in the same hole. All are early early-medieval (Anglo Saxon) in date. The Winchester City Archaeologist Tracy Matthews has visited the site with the finder, post-discovery. Both the buckle and shield boss suggest a date c. 6th-7th century. Catalogue: NB. Iron measurements are inclusive of a layer of uneven corrosion and are therefore less precise. All finds are iron unless otherwise stated. 1) Spear A complete iron spearhead with spl…

A possible piece of post-medieval (Civil War) iron shot, likely a casual loss and not fired. It measures 37.5mm in diameter and weighs 136g (to the nearest 2g), which suggests use as robinet shot (which has a bore diameter of c.38mm). Alternatively, it may be from an 18th -19th century lawn cannon or a grinding mechanism in mill use (for more information, see PAS record HAMP-CEFC84). The surface of the metal is worn and fractured.

A fragment of a probable medieval iron arrowhead with a flat blade, main part of arrow missing; cross section shows an incomplete socket. Suggested date of c. 1000-1500. Unfortunately these types of object cannot be more closely dated without contextual relationship as the design did not change for hundreds of years.

An iron tanged knife of probable Early Early-Medieval date (c. AD 450-670). The blade is triangular in cross-section, being thickest at the back of the blade (5.4mm) and narrowing to 1.2mm at the cutting edge. The blade back is convexly curved, as is the cutting edge (although shallower compared to the blade back). The tip is missing and the tang (25.6mm long, 4.0mm thick and narrowing from 10.1mm to 5.3mm wide) extends from the centre of the 27.8mm long vertical edge opposite to the missing tip. The knife measures 113.6mm in length, 37.7mm in max.width, 5.4mm in max.thickness and we…

An unidentified iron object, probably complete, of uncertain age (but plausibly Roman to post-medieval in date). It measures 9.6mm in diameter at the wider end and narrows over 74.9mm to the tip, 1.9mm in diameter. Between these two circular points the object has an otherwise square cross-section. Small pacthes of recent surface loss are apparent; otherwise the patina is a smooth, lumpy brown in colour. It weighs 19.76g.

A medieval (1300-1500) iron annular buckle frame complete with iron wire pin, corroded into place. The frame is apparently undecorated and circular in cross-section (2.4mm diameter). The pin measures 1.4mm in diameter and curls around the frame at one end, narrowing to a point at the other. Similar buckles are illustrated in Egan & Pritchard (1991:57) where they are described as shoe buckles and they were excavated from contexts dating late 14th - early 15th century and in Egan (2005:34) dated 1650-1700, however this is described as residual. Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A medieval to early post-medieval (c.1000-1550) wrought iron 'bearded' axehead. It has a triangular or 'wegde- shaped blade with a slight curve to the cutting edge; it projects downwards a little more than it projects upwards from the central body of the axe. The socket is triangular in shape with a triangular wing to either side, extending downwards. This is formed by bending the loop around and welding it to the other side, often resulting in a slight ridge. This is not obvious on this example, but may be concealed beneath the corrosion. The object is badly corroded and the wooden …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of medieval or post-medieval (c.1200-1700) iron spur, probably a prick spur, and consisting of part of the curved arm of the object and the incomplete projection possibly into a rowel box, although the narrow measurment at the break (10.36x9.25mm) suggests it is more likely from a prick spur. The object measures 54.91mm in length, 53.86mm in width and 14.06mm in height. It weighs 10.19g. The maximum height of the spur, at the projection, is 14.06mm. It narrows to 10.26mm at the longer arm-end.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete late medieval to early post-medieval iron dagger with copper alloy pommel, now in two pieces but missing its tip (worn break). It is broken across the upper part of the tang and the break seems relatively recent. The blade is triangular in shape and 240.53mm in length, narrowing from 30.78x8.36mm at the shoulders to the break (7.44x4.55mm) where it shows a lozengiform cross-section. The blade has a prominent central midrib and apparently bevelled edges, although the badly corroded state of the iron makes this difficult to tell. The tang has slightly thickened edges and…

Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A circular sphere of iron in a state of corrosion and possibly originally a piece of Post-Medieval (c.1600-1700) shot. It measures 46.99mm in diameter and weighs 340g, which suggests it may have been the right size for a falconet (which has a bore diameter of c.57mm). The village of Baughurst is thought to have been a site of civil war skirmishes, supporting the view this may be iron shot dating to the middle of the 17th century (http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/CCA48247-2056-4ABF-B113-6E5112F0109C/0/vds_baughurst_wolverton.pdf)

Post-Medieval probable iron shot, given the findspot location's proximity to the Battle of Cheriton in 1644 (which occurred in the neighbouring parish). It is likely this was a casual loss and not fired. It measures 36.96mm in diameter and weighs 163g, which suggests use as robinet shot (which has a bore diameter of c.38mm).
