(2000) note that weights of this type with numerals are consistent with the Roman weight-system as well as the averdepois system, thus they could equally be 16th century. Given the growing number of these lead weights being found in the North West, it is likely they are of a post-medieval date.

Lead shield shaped weight with crowned lis in relief. This weight is close to the averdepois pound (454g), the discrepancy may be accounted for by a slight loss at the point of the weight. Also, the averderpois pound was 16oz but there is evidence that in some parts of the country it was 15oz. Ref. Biggs N. & Wither P., Lead Weights – The David Rogers Collection, cf. 100-103. Lead lay (pan) weight. Dish shaped with raised edge on one face. A piece of lead has been added to the centre. Worn incuse stamp (crowned rose?) present and possibly other stamps now obscured by the added lead. The letter E has been crudely incised with a sharp blade or point on either side of the added piece of lead and beneath the stamp. Weight = 1.85 oz
