Very fine medieval gold annular brooch dating from the 15th century. The brooch is hollow cast and is hemispherical in section. Part of the frame is made up of a pair of very finely cast three-dimensional clasped hands, the right hand faces the front and is positioned over the left. There is a raised band immediately below the knuckles suggesting the end of a sleeve. The left hand, facing the back of the brooch, has the same band but is less pronounced probably due to wear. There is a small hole about 1mm diameter where the thumbs of the hands meet on the inner edge of the frame. Cuff…

Half of a ring cut as a gimmel. The exterior of the hoop is of cable design with engraved flowers extending partially around the hoop on both sides, the foliage of which retains green enamel (presumably the flower heads once contained enamel, but none survives). The half of the ridged bezel is engraved with a standing figure, possibly the Angel of the Annunciation. On the surface (concealed when the two halves were together) is an engraved inscription that is difficult to decipher. Two notches on the edge of the hoop served to fasten the halves together. Malcolm Jones notes that the i…

Gold medieval love or marriage ring. Very finely engraved with flowers and foliage. Note: This object was recorded over 20 years ago and does not meet the current standard of database records for the Portable Antiquities Scheme. Based on the image provided, the exterior of the ring is inscribed in a black letter script reading: "autre", which is likely part of a larger inscription reading "autre ne vueil", meaning 'desire no other', or "nul autre", meaning 'no other'. The inscription is surrounded by incised foliage. Many thanks to Malcol…
