Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Newport
Workflow stage: Published
Lead, or lead alloy, circular, non-heraldic personal seal matrix. The design of the seal consists of a legend around the outer edge of the matrix, separated from the central cross design by a circumscribing line. The matrix is incomplete and partially distorted. No evidence for a ridge or loop on the back of the matrix survives. An impression of the matrix is held by the National Museums & Galleries of Wales. Diameter c.27mm, thickness c.4mm, weight 13.6grams. The matrix was damaged both in antiquity and during excavation and only a partial reading of the inscription is possible. +[ ]…

Object type: CLOTH SEAL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Published
Lead, or lead alloy, rivet and washer (diameter 21mm, thickness 0.5mm). Possibly part of a medieval or post-medieval leaden cloth seal. Unfortunately corrosion obscures any detail which may survive on the seal. 14th to 19th century in date. The washer is centrally perforated and the rivet has been hammered over. Part of a connecting strip remains attached to the disc.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
Part of a cast copper alloy, single loop buckle with a sub-triangular frame and a narrowed offset strap-bar. The strap-bar is now missing. The missing strap-bar would have accommodated the buckle's pin and possibly also a sheet metal buckle plate. A groove on the front of the buckle's frame shows where the pin rested; this feature is probably the result of wear rather than a deliberately cast notch. The buckle is also slightly distorted. Width 55mm, length 21mm, weight 9.5grams (NB dimensions follow those defined by Egan and Pritchard 1991, 56, fig.35). Medieval closer dating of this …

Workflow stage: Published
Pot mend of a steeply sided vessel, crudely cast. Unusual metal type - microscopic examination suggests that it is a heavily leaded copper alloy which may have a tinned surface. Most pot mends are made from straight lead alloys and that this example has been made from a leaded copper alloy suggests that it may be a mend for a copper alloy vessel rather than a ceramic pot. Close dating is not possible but a medieval or post-medieval date is most likely. Dimensions 100m x 44mm x 4-8mm.

The end of a tapering horizontal arm, plano-convex in section, which terminated in two rings set like a figure of eight projecting equally above and below the arm of the spur. One complete and one fragmentary looped stud attachment for spur leathers survive in the terminal rings. Seventeenth century. Length of arm (minimum) 29mm, length of complete stud attachment 21mm, weight 7.0 grams.

Copper alloy circular, domed mount with two integral rivets. The mount is decorated with three concentric rings of different thickness and a central boss. Slightly distorted. Diameter 32mm, height of domed mount c.7mm, weight 9.5 grams. Mounts like this example were attached to leather straps or textiles and would have been mainly decorative in function. Dating them is difficult, some mounts of this type were in use as early as the thirteenth century; however, this example is likely to be significantly later and possibly dates to the sixteenth or seventeenth century.

Crudely cast, freestanding lead, or lead alloy, discoidal weight. The upper side is inscribed with the letter "H" in a crude Roman capital; while the underside is inscribed with a linear design which may represent the letter "T" in a crude Roman capital. It is uncertain whether the letter forms are cast features or were incised after the weight was cast. Both sides of the weight have a raised rim. Diameter 34mm, maximum thickness 7mm, weight 46.1 grams. Lead weights such as these could have performed a variety of functions such as unofficial weights and measures used by traders and mer…

Perforated lead, or lead alloy, discoidal weight.. One side of the weight is decorated with a concentric circle and a series of radiating lines; the other side has been damaged, probably in antiquity, by two linear incisions. Diameter 33mm, maximum thickness 6mm, diameter of perforation 7mm, weight 43.0grams. Again, lead weights such as these are difficult to date and assign a specific function to. Excavated weights similar to this example date from the medieval period until the nineteenth century and a date at some point in this long range for this example is likely. Conventionally, p…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan
Workflow stage: Published
Cast lead, or lead alloy, one-sided token decorated with a six petal flower design. Diameter 23mm, thickness 2mm, weight 5.1 grams. Although a fairly common find type little is known about the date, places of issue, function and extent of circulation of lead tokens. They have variously been identified as trade tokens, pilgrimage souvenirs, hop tokens, farm tokens, tavern tokens, communion tokens, merchants seals, counters and gaming pieces; they could have fulfilled all these, and more, functions. Lead tokens are thought to have circulated from the medieval period until the eighteenth …

Probably part of a cast copper alloy strap-type box mount. The mount is cast in copper alloy (probably bronze) with a central perforation and what appears to be a tapering terminal or knop but is where the mount has been broken. It is gilded on its upper surface and decorated with four probably white glass, rather than pearl, beads inset into the four corners of the main plate. Microscopic examination suggests that the underside of the mount was not gilded. Length 34mm, width 11mm, thickness 3.5mm, weight 3.9grams.
