An unidentified object which could possibly be a fragment from a torc or a bracelet. The object consists of a sub-spherical terminal attached to a curved arm. The arm, probably copper alloy based on its green surface colour, is U-shaped in section, with the channel largely filled with a similarly coloured metal, also probably a copper alloy, and which appears to be a continuation of the sphere. The exterior of the U-shaped section of the arm is decorated with three sets of transverse grooves - one at the terminal by the sphere, one near to the opposite terminal, and one between the tw…

Uncertain object, but possibly a stirring rod, consisting of two parts, one in silver and one in copper-alloy. The copper-alloy part consists of a broken shaft topped by a dog’s head. The shaft is corkscrew-like with a groove that starts at the downturned left side of the dog’s mouth. The shaft appears to be broken since the groove is truncated at the bottom. Looking at the object from below suggests that it was hollow cast then packed out with another substance, probably lead. The head is of a young dog with upturned snout with circular indents for nostrils; further circul…

Treasure case 2006 T608: Roman silver spoon fragment. Fragment of a Roman spoon in the form of a duck's head. The beak is rounded and flattened underneath. A step represents the head, whilst the neck has bevelled edges. Two point (solder?) set back from the head on the neck may represent the bird's eyes, although one is clearer than the other, which is hardly visible. Discussion: this fragment has become detached, either accidentally or deliberately, from the curved handle of a short-handled spoon or cignus, a well known late Roman spoon type attested in a number of late Roman h…

Terminal of a cignus type Roman spoon in the form of a bird's head; the rest of the handle and the spoon bowl are missing. The head is long and narrow, with a flaring, round-ended beak. A groove around this forms the mouth, and has small jagged notches forming teeth. There is a humped brow over the eyes, and between the vertical wall of this and the horizontal beak is a ridged moulding. There is an eye to either side of the brow; on one side this consists of a circular groove with an S-shaped eyebrow above, but on the other side the eye is made from the curled end of the eyebrow.
