Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy button brooch with a gilt surface. Button brooches are circular in shape and resemble miniature saucer brooches, although the relationship between these two brooch classes is not clear. This brooch is an example of Avent and Evison Class Bii. It is 20mm in diameter, all other measurements are unknown. It is decorated with an angular face-mask motif comprised of 7 different elements. This example is 22mm in diameter, the thickness and weight are unknown. The brooch is decorated with a face mask motif, however the exact form is unknown, thus it cannot be attributed to an Avent and Evison classification. Fragment of a copper alloy lozengiform strip brooch. The brooch consists of a flat, stretched-oval bow, decorated with 8 visible punched ring-and-dot motifs running lengthwise down its centre. The remains of a triangular catchplate on survive on the reverse, but the pin is missing.
This brooch type (with an oval or lozengiform body and basic integral safety-pin type sprung pin) has been confirmed as early-medieval only in recent years, and some have been published as late as 2000 as Bronze Age 'violin bow' brooches (e.g. Hattatt 2000, 281; refs. 1442, 1385). This brooch is an example of Avent and Evison Class ii. The brooch is 17mm in diameter, all other measurements are unknown. The brooch is slightly worn, with no gilding on the surface. Button brooches usually have a gilt surface; however there is no trace of gilt on this example.
