Copper-alloy annular brooch fragment. Cast flat lentoid-section fragment from a flat and broad-banded annular brooch, probably broken across a constriction for the pin [lost]. Irregular curvilinear scratches appear on the display side, which proved too incoherent to convey any credible reading to this reporter. Fortunately, Dr Malcolm Jones kindly comments: '..the lettering is definitely late med. I think I can read AMORE folowed by ?I?A..', confirming this to be an amatory message. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1350 Diameter: 39.3mm, Band Width: 5.7mm, Band Thickness: 2mm,…

A gold medieval blackletter posy finger ring dating from about AD 1400 - 1500. It is rectangular in cross-section. The posy on the external face is in dense blackletter and is extremely difficult to read, but it has been suggested to read "a [...] Cervyr" (an alternative spelling to servir) meaning 'to serve' with the word in the middle perhaps being an adverb or a name. The first letter of the middle word has a florid ornament like a large letter Z, further confusing the interpretation of the letters. The three words are separated by recessed fan shapes, or foliage or wing motif…

Copper alloy seal matrix. An oval matrix at the end of a facetted hexagonal section tapered handle with a collared lozenge-shaped apical suspension loop, now rounded by wear. A central motif depicts a bird perched on the edge of its nest feeding three chicks below; the angle of the head and a pendent strip in the bill of the bird may suggest the subject to be the Pelican in its Piety, a type or representation of Christ [like Christ caring for the world through his self-sacrifice, the pelican was thought to feed its young with blood drawn from its breast]. A Medieval lead alloy circular seal matrix dating to circa AD 1200-1300. The seal is circular in plan and is double-sided with a pierced circular lug at the top. One face is inscribed with S’ MARGARIT gREVE or gREVEs [Margaret Greave or Greaves] – with a central incised HIS. Malcolm Jones per comms suggests this could be the more commonly found IHS (he Christogram monogram symbolizing Jesus Christ). Perhaps it was mistankly marked in error by the inscriber.
