Copper alloy seal matrix. An oval matrix at the end of a facetted hexagonal section tapered handle with a collared lozenge-shaped apical suspension loop, now rounded by wear. A central motif depicts a bird perched on the edge of its nest feeding three chicks below; the angle of the head and a pendent strip in the bill of the bird may suggest the subject to be the Pelican in its Piety, a type or representation of Christ [like Christ caring for the world through his self-sacrifice, the pelican was thought to feed its young with blood drawn from its breast]. The handle is hexagonal in cross-section and tapers from the die towards a suspension loop with a pointed top and circular hole. Immediately beneath the loop there is a collar. The circular die has an inner and outer beaded border. However, the outer border is barely visible. Within the beaded borders is an inscription following a six-pointed star initial mark at 12 o' clock: * CREDE MIChI (Believe in Me). At the centre the die bears an engraved lion's head facing. Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast circular matrix with a facetted hexagonal-section handle which tapers towards a collared trefoil suspension loop. An incomplete Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, dating AD1100-1450. The seal die is circular with a faceted handle and a loop at the top, which is now broken. There is a double collar separating the handle from the loop. The die depicts a bird, probably a bird of prey, on a gloved hand. This suggests a falconry scene. The inscription reads RECLAMAT LE MVSCHET - "Call back the sparrow-hawk." This is a clear reference to the falconry emblem. Therefore, the seal matrix may once have belonged to a falconer.
