A medieval copper-alloy seal matrix, dating to the 14th century. It is pointed-oval in shape, flat and with an integral loop on the upper reverse of the object, which has a D-shaped upper part with a sloping solid wedge below. The die is quite crudely engraved. It depicts the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei), showing a lamb standing in profile looking right (left on the impression) in front of a banner consisting of a long upright ending in a cross at the top (which replaces the initial mark of the inscription) and with a faint, shallowly engraved flag halfway up and to the left (right on the …

An incomplete Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, dating AD1100-1450. The seal die is circular with a faceted handle and a loop at the top, which is now broken. There is a double collar separating the handle from the loop. The die depicts a bird, probably a bird of prey, on a gloved hand. This suggests a falconry scene. The inscription reads RECLAMAT LE MVSCHET - "Call back the sparrow-hawk." This is a clear reference to the falconry emblem. Therefore, the seal matrix may once have belonged to a falconer. No parallels for the inscription have been found, though many seal matrices wi…

Medieval (14th century) cast copper alloy circular seal matrix with faceted handle on reverse. The handle has six facets and a raised moulded collar before terminating in a circular suspension loop, now worn. The matrix depicts a profile cockerel looking left (on the inscription) and is surrounded by an almost-illegible inscription due to damage around the edge of the matrix. Luckily enough of the letters can be read to see that it is the formulaic inscription *PRIVE SV (I am private). It is 19.24mm long, 16.36mm in diameter and weighs 4.55g.

It is D-shaped in cross-section, the slightly convex exterior decorated with a series of relief lozenge-shaped panels, each containing a quatrefoil flower. In between the lozenges are pairs of sunken triangular panels, the base of each keyed for enamel which does not survive. A black-letter inscription inside the hoop reads tout ma vie (all my life). The words are close together, filling about half of the space available; the rest of the interior of the hoop is undecorated. Dimensions: Diameter: 18.09mm exter…
