A copper-alloy Medieval seal matrix, dating to AD 1300-1400. It is a flat disc with the engraved die on one face and the pierced lug on the other. The matrix itself depicts a squirrel surrounded by the legend: [I CRAKE NOTIS] translated in [I crack nuts]. Wildlife, particularly squirrels, hares and rabbits appear frequently on matrices of this type. Seal matrices of this type bearing imaginative legends in French or English and with decorative rather than heraldic central elements are typical of the 14th century AD. Harvey and McGuinness, (1996: pp. 88-89, 116). According to…

A fragment of a copper alloy post-medieval scale tang knife handle. The fragment is semi-circular in cross section and expands slightly at one end. The outer face of the narrower end is flattened and bears a slight recess containing the letters '...OR I' against a stippled background. There is a damaged piece of metal across one side of the expanded end, perhaps where the blade was fitted. A small number of similar (and often more complete) post-medieval knife handles also with inscriptions have been recorded by the PAS, including KENT64, LVPL-BD94F3, NMS-7AFE56 and SOM-4B5883. A…

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, hexagonally faceted handle with collared and pierced quatrefoil terminal. Circular die, diameter 18mm. Height 19.6mm. Two standing confronted figures, male and female, holding between them a probable pot containing a three-branched plant. There appears to be no line between this motif and the inscription around, which reads * LOVE ME ANDE I YE (Love Me and I Thee; the Y is a thorn. 14th century. Compare NMS-BA5875 and WAW-F8EFE2. This motto is mis-read by Tonnochy (1952, no. 738) as Love Me And Give.

A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval date. It has a flat circular die with hexagonally faceted conical terminal that tapers to a raised collar. Above the collar is an integral circular suspension loop with faceted exterior surfaces and small central circular perforation. At the centre of the die is a bird with long tail, folded wings and long beak within an inner circle. It is presumably depicted walking to the left, although if the matrix is oriented so that the start of the legend reads from the top (12 O'clock position) the bird is facing upwards. Possibly this is supposed t…

Description: A complete gold finger ring made of a flattened band engraved on the exterior with a French inscription in lower-case gothic or 'black-letter' script. The inscription begins with a small cross, and the words alternate with three very similar designs of a two-branched plant, one branch shorter and the other longer, each with thin leaves and ending in a feathery trefoil flower. The inscription reads en bon cuer (in good heart). There is also engraving on the interior of the hoop, made up of a single wheat stalk followed by what looks like two sets of initials separated b…

Medieval (14th century) cast copper alloy circular seal matrix with faceted handle on reverse. The handle has six facets and a raised moulded collar before terminating in a circular suspension loop, now worn. The matrix depicts a profile cockerel looking left (on the inscription) and is surrounded by an almost-illegible inscription due to damage around the edge of the matrix. Luckily enough of the letters can be read to see that it is the formulaic inscription *PRIVE SV (I am private). It is 19.24mm long, 16.36mm in diameter and weighs 4.55g.
