Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast flat pointed-oval, with a low ridge on the back forming a loop at one end, apparently broken by the corrosion of a ferrous metal link. An oval central panel bears a deeply cut image: one reading might be of the Madonna and child, with a probably crowned Virgin seated with an infant Jesus held to her right (in the imprint) possibly with a fluted column in front or below the figures. A worn legend is kindly rendered by Malcolm Jones as follows:.. ' MATER DEI MEMENTO MEI [Mother of God, remember me] '; Malcolm adds that this a common Marian inscription on s…

Medieval silver annular brooch with flat circular frame 12mm in diameter, 1mm thick and weighing 0.32g. There is a short pin constriction but the pin is missing. There is a split opposite the pin constriction but although there is now a gap here, there does not appear to be any actual metal missing. It is inscribed on one side in Lombardic capitals, starting at the right of the pin constriction and running anti-clockwise, starting with a heavily seriffed cross: + AMOR VINCI OMNI, a variant of AMOR VINCIT OMNIA (Love Conquers All). The reverse is undecorated. The lettering may sugge…

Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, 31mm long, 20mm wide and 7mm thick. The object is in good condition and weighs 6.81grams. The object is lentoid (pointed oval) in form and has an inscribed border reading S' (seal of) S' ThOME DE STEVETVN . The central motif consists of a bird of prey with outstretched wings and talons out. The reverse has a central semi-circular sectioned rib which widens towards a semi-circular pierced lug. Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast hexagonal-section handle with apical suspension loop. A strongly defined device is incised in a circular die. This illustrates a contraction mark resembling a yoke, surmounted by a cross potent; the ends of the 'yoke' are trifid, probably representing lis. Below this is a central pellet, above the letters IhC (for Jesus Christ). Malcolm Jones kindly read the inscription, which is set between two grooves, as the common *PRIVE SV* (I am private). The egg-waisted form of the S indicates an early 14th-century date, 1300-1350. Diameter: 19.4mm, Height: 2…

A worn but complete cast copper alloy Medieval Seal Matrix. The circular seal matrix has a hexagonal handle, slightly waisted and terminating with a trefoil suspension loop with a drilled circular aperture. The device is an abstract mouse with its nose pointing at the star that opens the legend, and its long tail visible curling under it. The legend around the edge probably reads: *IC_ICANO though it is difficult to know what this means. This reading was kindly revised by Malcolm Jones, who comments: '...it's a squirrel and legend is the common I CRA[K] A NOT [I crack a nut]The len…
