An incomplete cast and forged rotary early-medieval lock key dating to the period c. 750-1100.
Description: The key has a large flat ovoid bow incomplete at the top where it appears to have been broken across some terminal openwork decoration. This damage may have been reworked after it broke to keep it useable and presentable. Below this the bow has two small parallelly aligned holes. Below that are four slightly larger holes aligned roughly in a cruciform pattern. There appears to be worn incised decoration on both faces though the detail is now obscured by wear. The shank is ve…

An incomplete cast copper alloy late medieval to post medieval casket key, probably c.1100-1500. With just a 17.8mm length of the shaft and the bit remaining. The shaft is solid and oval in cross-section and has the last 2mm hollowed. The bit has a cleft on both the front and the rear.
A number of very similar rotary keys are shown in Egan's (111-119 ) From the size of the key and the presence of a hollow shank it is likely that the key would have been used to lock a casket rather than a door. The keys illustrated in this volume are all dated from the late 12th - to late 14th centu…

A fragment of cast copper-alloy rotary lock key representing the bow, likely 14th -15th century in date.
The bow is a quadrelobed frame and and this creates openwork quatrefoil pattern in plan. Each lobe is decorated with two small tirangular protrusion creating curved concave gaps between each lobe. The fragment is patinated a dark green colour.
This key fits Ward-Perkins key type VI which is dated to the 14th or 15th centuries, this example is a very ornate example. Slightly less ornate complete examples are represented on the PAS database such as WMID-8D4403.

A complete cast copper alloy folding key probably for a small casket or door dating to the middle early-medieval or early Medieval period. The key has a hollow circular sectioned shank with a long and plain rectangular bit at a right angle to the shank. The opposite end of the shank has a swollen rounded terminal through which a copper alloy rivet secures the looped head. The head is formed from a flattend loop of copper alloy, the terminal arms twisting to form two small flat lugs set perpendicular to the main loop; through these lugs is the rivet. The rivet enables the key to be fol…

A late medieval cast copper alloy casket key c.1100-1500 AD. The bow is oval in plan and worn very thin at the top edge. The shaft is oval in cross section with a drilling at the bit end to the depth of the bit. The bit is rectangular in plan with cut-out semi circular clefts both front and rear..

An iron key (locking) of Post-Medieval date. The key has a 'D' shaped' bow at the end of the circular cross sectioned stem. There are several collar along the length of the stem, including just before the bit. The bit has two irregular projections, one of which has been broken away by an old break.
It fits into Type 8 of the Goodall Classification used at Winchester and Salisbury (Salisbury Medieval Catalogue Volume 4), having a solid shaft projecting beyond the bit. These keys probably date from 1150 through to 1700. The projecting stem is an innovation of the 15th century and the…

Copper alloy key. Cast rotary key, flat sided with a round bow, a rectangular bit with a cleft in its front and back edges, and with a pointed end to its stem which projects slightly beyond the bit. The bow is crudely notched with a series of angled cuts. Probably for a casket. A Roman date was initially considered. However, Walter (Jo) Ahmet kindly comments as follows: 'I think it is highly unlikely this key is Roman, I think a medieval date is far more likely'.The material presented along with this object was mostly Roman. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500..

Cast quatrefoil bow from a copper-alloy key; a collar adjacent to the bow is nicked on both sides, possibly because there was a narrower stem. Walter (Jo) Ahmet kindly comments, correcting an initial identification of the object as a key of later date, as follows: 'Quatrelobed keys are a known feature of some copper-alloy rotary keys of the 14th-15th centures, Ward-Perkins ([1940], reprinted 1993, 140) discusses a number in the 1940 London Museum catalogue. He classifies them as a Ward-Perkins type VI'.
Width: 25.9mm, Diameter (collar): 10.6mm, Length: 38.1mm, Thickness (bow): 6.1mm
