Description: A rectangular piece of gold sheet, perhaps 'ribbon', 0.3mm in thickness, of probable Bronze Age date. One long edge is original while one short edge is bent over c.2mm to the reverse and appears to be cut. The remaining two edges are a little more jagged and it is uncertain is these are cut or breaks (although in shape they are uniformly straight). The 'front' of the object has numerous raised ridges of rectangular section and parallel to each other. To the reverse of the object these are visible as light grooves. Dimensions and metal content: The object measures 16.4m…

Description: Gold unidentified ornament of Bronze Age date. The object consists of a strip of sheet gold formed into the shape of a pointed oval. At either end, the long edges of the band have been folded inwards in order to create the pointed terminals. Near the tip of each terminal is a circular perforation. Both perforations are now blocked with soil. Dimensions: Length: 21.9mm, width: 4.6mm, thickness: 1.6mm, weight: 1.2g. Discussion: A number of parallels from the Portable Antiquities Scheme suggest that a Bronze Age date is most likely. Examples include Northfleet, Ken…

Two fragments of apparently originally-joining gold band or ribbon dating to the Middle to Late Bronze Age (c. 1600-800 BC). Both fragments are parallel-sided and of rectangular shape, the smaller fragment having a jagged break at either end and the longer having one jagged break and one straight cut. Both are slightly crumpled. The fragments are decorated on one face with fourteen raised ribs and corresponding grooves. The long edges of each also appear a little folded-over in places. The opposite faces are plain. Discussion: The incised linear decoration of the strip can be par…

The strip has been decorated with a series of embossed ridges along its length. The strip has been severed at both ends, one edge straight and the other ragged. A small fragment has broken off the larger object. The larger fragment measures 23.06 mm in length, 8.06 mm wide and 7.74 mm thick. The strip is 0.81 mm thick. It weighs 1.2 g. The smaller fragment measures 5.81 mm in length, 4.0…

The fragment comprises one end of a ribbon of gold the sides converging in a convex curve towards a rounded terminal. The fragment has been broken from a larger object and is creased and distorted along its length. Dimensions Length: 35mm; Width (max.): 11mm; Thickness: 0.5mm; Weight: 1.82g Metal composition Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of the fragment indicated a surface composition of approximately 88-90% gold, 9-11% silver with approximately 1% copper. A gold fragment of parallel sided strip or ribbon. The ribbon is rectangular in plan and made from a sheet of gold. One side of the ribbon is decorated with four regular, longitudinal, incised grooves. The other side of the ribbon is plain with some light scratches. The ribbon is slightly contorted indicating that the ribbon may have been folded and then un-folded. The damage is not new. One end has a neat, flat-ended terminal with sharp 90 degree corners implying the original finish. There is a circular perforation located 1.54mm from this end of the ribbon which is slightly off-cent…
