Description: Gold unidentified ornament of Bronze Age date. The object consists of a strip of sheet gold formed into the shape of a pointed oval. At either end, the long edges of the band have been folded inwards in order to create the pointed terminals. Near the tip of each terminal is a circular perforation. A Late Bronze Age hoard consisting of 17 objects or fragments of objects discovered during metal-detecting in an area "8 paces by 10 paces" in plough soil. None of the fragments join and none seem likely to be parts of the same object. It is highly likely that two socketed axe heads previously recorded from the same area in 1988 and 1955 also formed part of this hoard, and also possible that a palstave axe head found in the same area in 1969 formed part of the original deposit. Description 1. Fragment of a Late Bronze Age sword, comprising of the upper hilt with hafting plate perforated by six rivet holes (three on either side of the blade) and a section of the lower blade (including the ricasso). There is also evidence for a rivet hole in the grip just above the break. The lower hilt towards the terminal is missing.
