Early Saxon gilt copper alloy wrist clasp hook-plate, a hybrid of Hines 1993 Classes B and C, "a really curious piece" (John Hines, pers. comm.). The central part is similar to the Barrington type of Form C1 (ibid. fig. 129), but at its sides substantial extensions are left plain apart from pairs of engraved lines running parallel to the front and rear edges. The front face of the hook comprises a rectangular panel with S-shaped motifs. Two large pierced rectangular lugs or loops project from the rear edge. Some detail is obscured by corrosion, and very little gilding has survived. Le…

An inscribed lead spindle dating to the early 11th century. The whorl is trapezoid in cross-section and roughly circular in plan. An hour-glass shaped hole has been drilled through the centre, measuring circa 8mm diameter at the opening. The whorl is inscribed on the side and base with Norse runes. Dr. John Hines (Cardiff University) has examined the whorl. He writes: In late summer of 2010 a lead spindle-whorl with a Norse runic inscription was found at Saltfleetby St Clement, Lincolnshire. The whorl is from a field where previously one 11th-century stirrup-strap mount had been…

Two joining fragments making up nearly all of a gilded silver great square-headed brooch. The upper fragment consists of most of the headplate, the bow and a small part of the foot; the lower fragment consists of most of the rest of the foot. The headplate is missing one corner. It has an outer frame with deeply punched triangles inlaid with niello, giving a zig-zag effect in reserved silver. The niello has mineralised to a silvery colour and it is only possible to see the triangle shapes where the inlay has fallen out.Between this and a simple inner frame of a niello-inlaid groove is…

An incomplete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) gilt copper alloy brooch (AD 410-1066). The fragment is roughly rectangular with damage to the edges that obscures any possible breaks. The front surface is decorated with a curvilinear interlocking pattern. The pattern appears to be divided in half by a vertical moulded band. On either side in the bottom corners there appears to be two crouched figures with their faces in profile. Above these figures the curvilinear design is possibly depicting plants. There are four perforations located apparently randomly in the pattern, it is uncertain if…
