A fragment of a cast copper-alloy Early-Medieval Geat Square-Headed brooch, possibly relating to Hines group I, c.AD 500-550. Description: The fragment survives as an irregulalry shaped section of the central headplate panel and upper bow of the brooch. The bow is very shallow with a raised border and a central ridge which creates two panels on the bow. The central ridge extend from the bow into the central headplate panel. An inscribed lead spindle dating to the early 11th century. The whorl is trapezoid in cross-section and roughly circular in plan. An hour-glass shaped hole has been drilled through the centre, measuring circa 8mm diameter at the opening. The whorl is inscribed on the side and base with Norse runes. Dr. John Hines (Cardiff University) has examined the whorl. He writes: In late summer of 2010 a lead spindle-whorl with a Norse runic inscription was found at Saltfleetby St Clement, Lincolnshire. Two joining fragments making up nearly all of a gilded silver great square-headed brooch.The upper fragment consists of most of the headplate, the bow and a small part of the foot; the lower fragment consists of most of the rest of the foot. The headplate is missing one corner.It has an outer frame with deeply punched triangles inlaid with niello, giving a zig-zag effect in reserved silver.The niello has mineralised to a silvery colour and it is only possible to see the triangle shapes where the inlay has fallen out.Between this and a simple inner frame of a niello-inlaid groove is…
