A complete Roman copper alloy stylus, dating to c AD 300 - 400. The stylus is slightly bent and the spatula end bent a little further to one side. The spatula is a broadening of one end to erase, and in this case is close in form to an equilateral triangle. A split leaf-like decorative feature separates the spatula from the shaft. A central panel of decoration takes up about one third of the length of the shaft, separated from the other two sections by a deep circumferential groove. The decoration is divided roughly into three: at the spatula end it consists of a panel of incised diag…

Lead papal bulla, now worn, damaged and distorted. It is circular, c. 38mm in diameter, and 5.2mm thick. It weighs 54.1g. There is no obvious cord hole and the die-axis is about 1o'clock (see below for Tim Pestell's comment on the die-axis). The obverse has relief lettering that is now very difficult to read. The letters GRE can just be seen at the top, then GOR on the second line, then PP on the third. The issuing pope was therefore one of the Gregorys. The reverse is much clearer. It has a beaded border, and within are the letters SPA SPE at the top; the S has a crossbar a…

Medieval lead papal bulla of Gregory IX dating to the period AD 1227 - 1241. The obverse is the better preserved face and exhibits the legend GRE/GORIVS·/PP VIIII· within a pelleted outer border. The reverse is worn and pitted. The heads of Saint Paul and Saint Peter are visible, with the legend SPA SPE above. The cord holea are no longer visible due to corrosion. Although elements of the obverse lettering are crisp, the surface patination is not good enough to preserve die-flaw traces, although the first "E" shows the central bar with flanking lines well. The referse is sealed at 3…

Medieval lead papal bulla in very worn condition of Gregory IX (AD 1227- 1241). The obverse is pitted, especially along the bottom register, making the distinction of the numerals difficult. However, the lettering G/RIV../PPII.. is clear enough and within that the initial G is of the tightly curled form that marks it out as being of Gregory IX. The reverse is similarly worn and pitted although the heads of SS Paul and Peter may be made out reasonably, as well as the lines of pelleting around both heads. The channel for the thread suspending the bulla from the document has broken throu…
