A cast copper-alloy ring-shaped bead of unknown date. The bead has a D-shaped cross section with circular-sectioned perforation at the centre. It measures 14.5 mm in external diameter and is 5.6 mm thick. It weighs 4.43 grams. Simple coppe-alloy beads are hard to date accurately as they were used widely from the Bronze Age onwards, becoming more common in the Roman and Medieval periods and enduring until the Post-Medieval period . This particular type of bead has been found elsewhere in Sussex in conjunction with supporting Roman material: cf. PAS records SUSS-368530 and SUSS-3957C6.

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Milton Keynes
Workflow stage: Published
Cast copper alloy mount, which was possibly a scabbard mount. This object consists of a large round "button" protruding from one end, a narrow long shaft, and another small possible knop or fixing attachment at the other end. The top of the object has a larger rounded top end and a smaller rounded opposite end, with a ridged shaft of the same width, continuing over the top of both ends. It is unclear exactly what this object is; however, the manner of the ends suggests that this object could have been used to secure an item to leather or to connect two elements together. This is cons…

A copper alloy object; probably a bead. It is broadly circular in shape with a 3.2mm central circular hole. However, part of the outside edge has two angled facets that may be where it has broken from a larger object. One face of the object has a more convex shape than the other which in places is almost flat. The degree of patination and corrosion suggests the object has some age. No further stylistic embellishment is present. The object measures 11.2mm in diameter and weighs 1.65 grams. The surface is rough and has a dark greyish-green patina.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete cast lead-alloy probable Medieval or Post Medieval circular uniface lead weight or token. Although the object resembles lead tokens from this period, it is thicker and larger than the normal size for tokens of this type with a bevelled circumferential edge, suggesting that it could have also been used as a small pan or standing weight instead. One side has either the initial A or more likely, a simple triangle for identification; the other side is plain. The object has a diameter of 25.4mm, 5.91 mm thick and weighs 24.2 grams.
It is uncertain whether this object was used …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A corroded and complete cast copper alloy annular bead, of unknown date. The bead has an angular D-shape or sub-triangular cross section and is pierced with a central hole approximately 5 mm in diameter. The slight grey patination colour to the metal suggests that the bead has an increased tin content. It measures 11.31mm in diameter, 5.11mm thick and weighs 2.1grams.
This particular bead has been found with a wealth of objects dating to the Roman period (c. 43-410 AD). However, as these types of beads have been manufactured from the Bronze Age to the Post Medieval period a posi…

An incomplete Medieval or Post Medieval copper alloy object. It is a broadly rectangular shape that tapers along its length towards an inwardly curved end which terminates in a narrow, short rectangular stub. The curved area has two parallel bands across the width of the face, in between which there is a central rivet of different "white metal" alloy composition that protrudes by 1.7mm through to the other side. The wider end of the object is bent slightly backwards towards the rear face where it terminates in an old fracture. No direct parallel for the object can be found but the fo…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Medieval or Post Medieval object, possibly a mount. The object is rectangular in form with a D shaped cross-section. One end finishes in an old break, the other in a point with two symmetrical side knops. Between the two knops there is a circular rivet hole that shows evidence of rust at the surface. Although the object is generally flat, the underside surface has a slight but regular curve, suggesting that it was originally fixed to a curved surface. The object is undiagnostic but the form suggests a Medieval date, possibly a casket mount or dress a…

A probable cast copper-alloy needle of uncertain Roman to Post Medieval date. The needle shaft is oval in cross-section and has a flat threading-end with a circular hole pierced through the diameter of the shaft approximately 13.6 mm down from the flat end; the needle tapers from this end to a point. The pointed end is now substantially bent and slightly damaged. It is probably a heavy duty needle: however sail needles and those used on leather are sometimes square in section and most of the examples recorded on the PAS database feature elongated sub-oval threading-holes. It could …

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small cast copper-alloy chisel of uncertain date, possibly Roman-Medieval. The chisel is roughly triangular in plan, ranging from sub-triangular to sub-rectangular in cross-section. The narrow end is flat and sub-rectangular and the wider blade-end is flat and sub-triangular. It has an even dark green patina in keeping with objects of this date in Sussex. However, due to insufficient diagnostic features, it is difficult to suggest a specific date for this object. The chisel measures 37.2 mm long, 7.15 mm wide, 4.9 mm thick and weighs 6.6 grams.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A curved copper alloy decorated strip, possibly a fragment of a bracelet.
The strip is curved and is sub-oval in section. It measures 53.4 mm between the ends, 3.2 mm wide, 2.5 mm thick and weighs 15.9 grams. The outer edge is decorated with incised transverse grooves between shorter plain sections. This section does not include a terminal or joint, although it does narrow at one end, possibly suggesting a terminus.
This object is similar to Roman 3rd-4th copper alloy armlets (e.g. Crummy 1983, Fig. 44 No. 1689), but is lacking diagnostic features that would assist a more accura…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy Medieval or Post Medieval probable lace tag, dating to between c. 14th-to c. 17th centuries AD. This example has not been simply created from a copper-alloy sheet and rolled; rather, this object has a solid cast globular head which is attached through casting to a short rectangular sheet which has a rivet hole at the end. It would appear that there should have been a metal sheet opposite the first one which is now missing. The chape measures 20.5mm total length, 8.3mm diameter, 7.3mm wide. It weighs 3.62 grams.
