A worn and corroded Post Medieval silver shilling of Charles I (1625-1649 AD). It is possible the coin may be a contemporary copy, the surface is heavily debased and there appears to be a surface coating that in places is spalling off the core. The underlying metal is showing an orange-coloured corrosion product, however, the metal is not attracted to a magnet. The coin has a bracketed R as the initial mark and if regular would date from 1644-1645 AD; Possible North; English Hammered Coinage vol 2 (1995) p160; number 2231.
