Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint end-scraper or 'thumbnail' scraper of Neolithic or early Bronze Age date. The scraper has been manufactured on a primary cortical flake and is discoidal in plan view, retaining c. 50% of its original cortex, possibly for the purpose of facilitating grip. The piece retains its cortical platform and a slightly diffuse bulb of percussion, although no bulbar scar is visible. In profile, the scraper is broadly plano-convex and very squat, which is typical of scrapers from this period. The piece has been retouched intensively at the distal end, with multiple long sub-parale…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint retouched flake of probably Neolithic or Bronze Age date. The flake is unpatinated and light brown in colour, with two dorsal arrises on the upper surface and two negative flake scars visible (one terminating in a hinge fracture). The platform is extremely irregular in shape and at least 50% seems to have splintered off on detachment. A prominent bulb of percussion and small bulbar scar are visible on the ventral surface, with the flake demonstrating a feather type termination. Some long sub-parallell retouch removals are visible at the distal end of the dorsal right …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped probably late Mesolithic- early Neolithic flint blade, c. 7000-3500 BC. The remains of the platform and small bulb of percussion are present on the proximal ventral face, along with some conchoidal ripples. Both edges show signs or retouch. There are three scars on the dorsal side of the flake. The distal end has broken off, revealing a triangular cross-section at this segment. The flint has a whitish grey patina on all surfaces, including breaks. The blade measures 33.5mm long, 18.7mm wide, 4.7mm thick and weighs 3.89 grams.

A complete knapped probably late Mesolithic- early Neolithic retouched flint blade, c. 7000-3500 BC. The remains of the platform and small bulb of percussion are present on the proximal ventral face, along with conchoidal ripples. When proximal end is oriented up, the right mesial edge of the proximal end to middle of the tool has been retouched, perhaps for hafting or for gripping. On the same edge further towards the distal end there is additional less invasive retouch. Similar retouch is visible on the left mesial distal end. The flint is of an even light-dark grey colour with s…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint late Neolithic to early Bronze Age thumbnail scraper, c. 2500-1500 BC. The scraper is sub-oval or 'thumb-shaped' in plan, with scaled, abrupt retouch on the dorsal face at the distal end, with some further retouch on both mesial edges. It is possible that the retouch on the left mesial edge from the dorsal face is retouched to facilitate holding the object, whereas the right mesial edge could have been used as a scraping edge. The platform of percussion and bulb of percussion are both visible on the proximal end, as well as light conchoidal ripples on the ventral face.…

Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint knapped implement, probably an unfinished roughout of a Neolithic axehead (3500-2100 BC). The roughout is assymetrical, with large covering removals on both faces. There is some natural damage on the ventral surface. The original knapped surface has a thick chalky white patina. It measures 131.3mm long, 63.2mm wide, 32.8mm thick and it weighs 242 grams.

County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete leaf-shaped knapped flint arrowhead of probable early Neolithic date (c. 3500-2100 BC). It is unpatinated and struck from a grey/brown flint. It is sub-oval in plan, and narrows unevenly at the proximal end, whilst also tapering to a blunted point at the distal end. The edges have irregular retouch and nibbling, with additional losses towards the distal end. Both surfaces have considerable flaking scars.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Neolithic knapped flint axe, consisting of the broken butt-end of the axehead (c. 3500-2100 BC). Type A. The remains are sub-triangular in plan, with a narrowed, almost pointed butt end and a small portion of the axe body. The axehead has been well-knapped over both surfaces and there are extensive covering removals. It has a lentoid cross-section. A break, likely due to use, has fractured the axehead and the latter portion of the tool including the rounded cutting edge is now missing; the remaining portion probably consists of between 1/3-1/2 of the original length, but…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A severely damaged fragment of a Neolithic polished handaxe, c. 3500-2100 BC. It is likely that this fragment constitutes the blade-end of the axehead. Although some of the original polished surface remains on both sides, most of the surface area is scarred from damage, presumably while in situ. The axehead is of a mottled light grey to dark grey patina with some larger natural chert inclusions. The cross-section of the axe fragment is of a narrow oval shape. The fragment measures 31.1 mm long; 56.8 mm wide, 18.5 mm thick and weighs 37.71 grams. Possibly Butler Type B, thin-butted han…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint horseshoe type scraper of the Neolithic period (3500-2100 BC). The struck flake is sub-circular in shape and is a mottled grey to dark grey in colour. There is a significant bulb of percussion on the dorsal face with concoidal waves indicating the striking platform at the proximal end. The striking platform was on the original cortex of the flint. The distal end and left and right edges have semi-abrupt retouch. There is some damage to the retouched edge but the majority of removal is of the parallel or sub-parallel type.

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worked lithic core, possibly Neolithic in date (c. 4500-1500 BC). Because of the core, it is difficult to discern whether this was initially worked and discarded before final use or whether the traces of flint-working indicate its usage as a more robust tool. It is possible to see areas where flint-knapping has taken place with thin flakes removed and a deeply grooved hinge fracture and some light retouching on one edge. Small areas of cortex remain on unworked edges. Some of the breakage visible seems to be natural. It measures 82.5mm long, 51.6mm wide, 30.1mm thick and weighs 107 grams.
