Object type: SEAL
Broad period: MODERN

Lead seal, as kindly identified by Amy Downes. Amy comments: 'I think these lead seals (NLM-F0D809 and NLM-B70D14 as well as this one) are thought to be Post Office seals. See https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/851401.' A cast straight-sided hollow lead strip with central cavity measuring 10mm by 0.8mm, with a closely juxtaposed series of three oval bars on either flat side, and neatly cut at its ends. One of three objects of generally similar form, though as all are of distinct sizes and slightly varied form these are not bits cut from the same strip. Lettering on one…

Copper alloy handle or thumb loop from a saucer candlestick, as kindly identified by Amy Downes. Cast oval loop with an integral oval expansion at its midpoint, a projecting spur, and an attachment lug terminating in a thin [0.2mm] oval plate through which pass two rivets of head diameter 8mm and shank diameter 3mm; the rivets pass through another, thicker [2.3mm] plate and are burred at their ends to secure them. The parts of the object are now squashed together. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Length (overall as found): 36.2mm, Width: 29.7mm, Thickness (loop): 2.1mm, …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire

Lead alloy and iron pin head. A thick cast rhomboid plate with three orders of relief decoration, probably pelleted, though the bubbled surface arising from poor casting obscures this; with the stub of an iron shank of diameter 1.1mm projecting from one angle, and with a rectangular iron loop behind the plate. Amy Downes kindly comments: 'Do you think this could be a Hooked Tag?', a suggestion followed in amending the dating initially proposed (1550-1650). Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Length: 23.2mm, Width: 20.3mm, Thickness (clear of loop): 4.9mm, Weight: 6.25gms

Copper alloy pastry jigger, as kindly noted by Amy downes, Teresa Gilmour and Sally Worrell, correcting an earlier identification by this reporter of the object as a stylus. Cast T shaped object with an oval section stem or handle of [now] two slightly bulbous parts divided by a collar, expanding at one end to a flat-ended spatulate form with four equidistantly spaced notches along its edge on both sides; the other end is broken. The spatulate end is slightly angled relative to the handle. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800 Length: 64.1mm, Width: 15.2mm, Diameter (at collar):…

Copper alloy vessel fragment. Robust cast hook with a waisted lug for rotating suspension, which would necessarily engage a slot or socket. Diagonal striations may be file or wear marks and appear on both sides of the hook and along its back edge. Amy Downes kindly corrects an initially imprecise identification with reference to find BH-D62546, suggesting this to be a a vessel handle lug. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Object type: PIN
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Possible Picardy Pin of Bronze Age date, as kindly identified by Amy Downes with reference to GLO-439E61. The discussion of that object considers the object likely to have fastened a cloak, with the cup-shaped receptacle at its end intended to hold a decorative stone. The stubs at the other end would in this case relate to some supplementary means of attachment - they are features absent from the object reported from Gloucestershire. Cast bobbin-shaped rod of round section, slightly expanded towards the mid shaft to a maximum diameter of 9.3mm, with an open round cu…

Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast Y-shaped object with longitudinal drilled or drill-finished holes of diameter 3.9mm running down the centre of each of its arms; these holes are set centrally in the rounded and slightly expanded terminals of each arm. Broad smoothed mould lines run around both sides of the object. A Roman date was initially amnd speculatively offered. However, Amy Downes kindly comments as follows: 'Though not backed up by evidence yet, there is a theory that these objects are gas pipe splitters. See Garry's Odds and Sods sheet number 62'. Length: 34.2mm, W…
