Object type: HOOK
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper alloy S shaped suspension hook. One loop of the S is smaller than the other. The object is poorly cast as the two halves of the mould were not quite lined up. This has produced a step along the centre of the hook where the top half overhangs on one side, and the bottom half juts out on the other. If it had been properly made, the hook would have been circular in section, and it tapers to a blunt point at each end. The object has a light green patina. It is hard to think of other uses for the object except as a suspension hook, but it is interesting that there is no visible we…

Object type: BUTTON AND LOOP FASTENER
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Published
A cast copper alloy button and loop fastener of Roman date, c.50 – 150 AD. This is an example of a Wild type III (1970). The button is teardrop shaped with a raised, central circular boss. Surrounding the boss is a narrow groove which would probably once have been filled with coloured enamel; only traces of a white substances now survive. The shaft projects from the reverse of the button and bends at a right angle upwards before splitting into a circular loop which is broken. The fastener is cast as a single, solid, piece. The metal is a light brownish-green colour and is slightly pitted.

A lead Russian bag or bale seal dating from 1812. The seal is circular with a hole for the cord running from side to side. One side has: […] / (ABAN) / 1812”.
