Post Medieval bone and yellow metal mount, pendant or brooch. The central neo-classical female bust has been carved out of bone and set into a beaded yellow metal, probably a gold alloy, oval band. At a later date this has been enclosed, probably as a repair, by a facetted yellow metal oval band. This bears scarring, possibly from mounts to make it useable as a mount, pendant or brooch. It is possible that original bone carving may have been done by a Napoleonic prisoner of war in order to earn some extra money. It is also possible that it was originally coated in another material, po…

Probably a Post Medieval copper alloy mount from a piece of furniture or possibly something like a tray. It is a vertical element, or post, from a miniature decorative railing. The horizontal section, or rail, was placed in the hollow aperture on the side of the post. A second post would then have retained the other end of the rail. Such rails were common place on items like serving trays, long case clocks, and crockery shelves. Dates to between c1660 and c1900 AD. There is a possibility that it may be an unusual form of top jaw screw from a Post Medieval flintlock pistol. The leng…

Late Medieval to Post Medieval lead alloy mount. It is a concave sided hexagon in plan. The inner face has a four sided void in one half and a central bent over spike that would have served as a means of attachment. The outer face rises semi abruptly from the rim to create a plateux. On this there is relief decoration in the form of a cinquefoil with a raised central pellet. There is basic veining to the petals of the cinquefoil. Probably dates to between c1400 and c1600 AD, but it may be later. The length is 31mm, the width is 30mm, thickness 7mm, and the weight 20.14g.

Probably a lead alloy blackjack or cosh which is among the simplest of all weapons possibly dating to the 19th century. The length is 42mm, the width is 26mm and the weight 51.00g. A blackjack (American English), or cosh (British English), is a small, easily concealed club consisting of a leather-wrapped lead weight attached to the end of a leather-wrapped coil spring or rigid shaft, with a lanyard or strap on the end opposite the weight. The same improvised weapon is referred to in British English slang as a "cosh." The word "cosh" is sometimes used loosely for any blunt instrumen…

The mount takes the form of a three-dimensional perched bird in the form of an imperial eagle with neck outstretched and wings part- folded and head turned to the left side. The end of the wings is marked by a horizontal step, beyond which the feathers of a protruding tail are represented as a short semi-circular extent with feathers incised. The feathers are represented by incised scale-like arcs in rows confined by straight incised lines, converging on the …
