Object type: SPOON
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Published
A Post Medieval tinned copper-alloy spoon handle decorated with an engraved curving line and short strokes. The top is curved upwards at the very end and is surmounted by a knop. Both sides are decorated with identical incised curving pattern.
A number of complete spoons that are identical in form to this example have been identified in the Museum of London collections (A10625 and A3934) and thus a Post Medieval date for these objects seems certain. It is interesting they have mostly broken in almost the same place and it maybe the twisting of the stem made them more fragile in tha…

Brian Spencer, formerly Senior Keeper at the Museum of London, who made a life-time study of ampullae, has written: 'Ampullae or miniature phials were an important kind of souvenir. Generally flask-shaped, but with a narrow, flattish section, they were designed to contain a dose of the thaumaturgic water that was dispensed to pilgrims at many shrines and holy wells. Ampullae were made of tin or le…

A copper alloy double looped buckle of Medieval date. The object is rectangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. The object is centrally curved in profile with recurved ends. Each outside edge of the object has a series of rabbets with four widthways grooves.
A very similar example is illustrated by Whitehead (1996, page 77; no. 476), who dates it to the 15th century and suggests it may be a buckle for armour. However, a buckle of similar form is also illustrated by Egan & Pritchard (1991, pages 97-98; no. 443) which was excavated from a context dating from between 127…
