A handle section from a Roman Amphora, probably a Dressel 20 container. The surface fabric is a hard and rough with a high content of sub angular quartz grains and reddish iron ore type inclusion with a pale grey core. The Dressel 20 amphora was a globular vessel produced in Baetica, southern Spain, largely for the exportation of olive oil. Production of these vessels commenced in the 1st century and probably continued until the mid 3rd century, with the peak of importation in Britain being the Antonine period (Tyers 1996: 87).

A copper alloy rim fragment from a vessel, possibly of Roman to medieval origin c. 50 - 1500 AD. The fragment has a slightly bulbous rim form with a diameter of 4.38mm. There are wheel turning marks to the outer surface finish, perhaps done on a continuous turning lathe contraption known as a great wheel. From a rim chart measurement, the completed dish/bowl, could have had a diameter of around 36cm. The surface has a dull mid-green patina.

A copper alloy three-dimensional vessel mount in the shape of a bird, possibly a raven or crow, dating to the Roman period. (c. AD 43 - 410). The bird is depicted standing with wings folded across the back. The head is well depicted and features a circumferential groove to indicate where the beak stops and plumage begins; the beak is wide and solid and it is this element that is reminiscent of a raven or crow's beak. The eyes are simple indentations either side of the head. The underside of the bird's body has been decorated with multiple pits to create a stippled effect to denote fea…

A Medieval cast copper alloy zoomorphic vessel spout probably dating to the 15th century AD. The cylindrical spout was cast separately from the rest of the vessel and soldered on via the long sloping 'C' shaped arm. The spout itself is tubular and terminates in a dog's head with open mouth from which protrudes the end of the spout. The dog's head has a moulded nose, prominent, rounded brow and sub-oval ears that extend slightly above the flattened head; the eyes are not distinguished. These artefacts are pouring spouts likely to be from a pedestal based ewer like a priests washing bow…

Two roughly triangular sheet copper alloy pot mends, probably from a sheet metal vessel such as a cauldron or skillet (Egan 1998:166). One pot mend has three holes punched through it probably for rivets to secure it to the main vessel. On the other example the rivet holes contain copper alloy. These pot mends may relate to the handle area of the vessel, which was a weak point, or alternatively the upper portions of a vessel towards the rim; one of the mends is of folded copper suggesting it may have been slotted over the rim of a vessel. These pot mends probably date to the High-medie…

A late Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy fragment of a rectangular drop handle for a bowl or a chafing dish. The handle has an oval section which bends at right angles and changes to a round section. The terminal is shaped like an animal's head with an open mouth and an upturned nose. The eyes are represented by two pairs of parallel diagonal incised lines and the ears by two single diagonal lines. Just behind the animal-headed terminal is a further copper alloy ring with a round sectioned projection that has two rectangular lugs at the junction with the ring. This is free moving…
