An incomplete late medieval or post-medieval lead token, probably dating to the period c. AD 1400-1600. The token depicts one one side a long cross with circule around the the middle of the cross, with a pellet in each quarter thus created, surrounded by an outer border of pellets. The opposing side depicts an indecipherable design, possibly lettering or possibly an object. In the current orientation the design is ship-like, possible a mast and the hull, although the token being found so far in land tends to negate this interpretation. The 'mast' of the ship may be a cross, although t…

These objects were probably tokens or tallies issued to farm workers, in a similar fashion to early modern hop tokens. They could also be a form of advertisement, a poor-man's version of 17/18th century trade tokens.

A cast lead device that resembles a lead steelyard weight however, the top, although now damaged, does not have a clear indication of a suspension hole, but it may not have been drilled. This object may then be a standing weight and is likely to be of medieval date, uncertain but probably C12th-C13th. It has been suggested that this could also be a gaming piece but in comparison this seems unlikely. Ref. The obverse has the Arms of England, a shield with three lions passant, but facing right instead of left. The shield is then encircled by a laurel wreath. The legend around the obverse, reading EDW T R ANGLI DNS HB LONDON (the 'N' in DNS is reversed), is perhaps indicative of this seal being linked to an official Edwardian Privy Seal or, someone implying that connection. The reverse has a round flower of six ovate petals w…
