A fragment of a silver Ottoman coin, probably a 'para', dated to the late Post Medieval period (c. AD 1700-1800). The obverse shows a small section of the signature/tughra of the sultan, but too little remains to determine which one. The reverse of the coin shows the Arabic words 'dhuriba fi' meaning 'minted in', and a number '2' or '3' over the 'b' of the 'dhuriba' representing when it was minted. Roughly a quarter of the coin remains. The overall dimensions are as follows: 11.46mm in length, 11.3mm in width and 0.41g in weight.

The coin appears to be a dirham of the Samanid ruler Isma'il I ibn Ahmad. The date is year Hijra 293 (= AD 905/6). There is usually a second, outer marginal inscription on the obverse of Samanid dirhams - unless the coin has been clipped. This could be an imitation, of a copper coin, with single marginal legends. It's not possible to read the mint, as there is a hole pierced, but the mint name is short, so probably Balkh. Samanid dirhams were transmitted in large numbers via river routes from the Caspian Sea to Scandinavia, as a result of Viking-Age trade, and from Scandinavia in smal…

Paul Cannon kindly comments: A silver Ottoman coin (probably a 'para') of Ahmed III (AH 1115-1143; equivalent to AD 1703-1730). It cannot relate to the previous Sultan Mustafa II for several reasons. In common with most Ottoman coins the dates they bear are usually the accession date of the sultan, ie the date he came to the throne. The face with the date translates as "(struck) in Islambol 1115". To the left of the date is a single Arabic letter which is probably a 'mim', one of numerous initial marks used. Islambol is one of the various names for Istanbul. Islambol was used for th…
