A modern replica of a Hiberno-Norse penny produced using the obverse from the Hiberno-Norse coin copying Aethelred II's (AD 978-1016) long cross combined with the reverse copying his last small cross. The piece is possibly a replica made by a re-enactment group as the coin does not appear to have been made to deliberately deceive, the reverse including the fictitious inscription HROLF M-O WIRHALH.

A modern imitation of an Anglo-Saxon sceat of Series E ('Porcupine' type). The imitation is a match for the 'Ashmore' replica produced by Trevor Ashmore in the 196-s-70s. It is listed in Abramson's 'Sceattas: an illustrated guide', p. 154 no. 8. On the reverse is a beaded square enclosing bars, with possible symbols around the outer edge of the coin. A modern copy of an Early Medieval silver halfpenny of Edward the Elder (899-924), based upon Norrth 660 (floral penny) albeit seemingly intended to be a halfpenny version, of which no real examples are known. The style and flan of the coin are not consistent with an early-medieval piece- the flan is too smooth and the design/inscription too well defined and crisp. It may be an 'Ashmore copy' who produced a very similar fake penny of this type (T. Abramson 'Anglo-Saxon counterfeits', p.152). Obverse: Small cross pattee within a plain inner circle; inscription: EADVVEARD REX Rev…

A modern imitation of a silver post-medieval Scarborough siege piece valued at one shilling and sixpence dating to 1645 (North 2650, Type I (k); Spink 3162). The siege piece is roughly octagonal in shape, typical of many imitations and appears to share the same obverse castle die (the letter and demonination were added directly to the flan) of an imitation produced on a Victorian florin (see http://www.coinarchives.com/w/openlink.php?l=1661354|1559|832|285502c28894e7716cfb680b95e02869). A modern white metal copy of a post-medieval halfgroat of Henry VIII (1509-1547), copying either the third or post-humous coinage. There are several reasons to consider this a modern rather than contemporary forgery, probably dating from the Victorian period onwards. The flan of the coin is too round for a hammered coin of this period, and the edges of the coin a flat with sharp corners. The initial mark (cross with pellet centre) is not one known for Henry VIII and the inscriptions on both obverse and reverse contain inaccuracies- the end of obverse inscription reads [ ]RSh; the r…

A modern imitation of a medieval silver penny of William I (1066-1089), Pax type (North 858-50). The reverse inscription reads STAMFORD CASTLE rather than giiving a mint and moneyer and the weight is too high for an official, medieval issue. It can probably be considered a tourist/re-enactment piece of the late 20th-early 21st century Obverse description: Facing bust with sceptre right. A probable modern fake of a penny of Edward the Confessor, Winchester mint. The coin appears to be imitating a hammer cross type (AD 1059-1062) although there is no annulet in the quarters of the cross as is usual for this series. The obverse inscription reads 'EADHARRD REX', crowned bust with sceptre right. The reverse reads 'ELFPINNE ON PINC'. The coin is of a very tinny white metal, and is of the correct weight and diameter however there is little wear and no tarnishing and the metal does not look or feel right for silver of this period.

A fake or counterfeit 8 reales piece of Phillip II of Spain (1556-1598), Mint of Lima. The coin has a flan of irregular thickness and the ridged edges suggest it has been cast. The coin appears to be of lead or an alloy of lead. It is most likely that the coin is of a modern date, although this remains somewhat uncertain. See HESH-B277B3 for a similar counterfeit coin from North Wales.

A Modern copper alloy copy of a Post Medieval gold 8 escudos, Charles III from colonial Columbia dated AD1760. The coin is struck off-centre. John Naylor: I've not found very much 'proper' publication-wise about counterfeiting of Spanish gold, suffice to say it happened. The coin is patently, of course, not an official coin as it is definitely copper. The main issue is whether it's a contemporary counterfeit or a modern fake. My gut feeling is the latter- it all appears very crisp and it just doesn't look 18th century to me. During the 18th century you're actually more likely to ge…

Cu-alloy token or counter dating from the late 18th century. The major series of these cu-alloy tokens or counters which are depicting Queen Anne appears to have been struck in Birmingham during the reign of George III. Counters of that class bear designs based on Queen Anne's shillings and sixpences: all bear the pre-Union form of shields...and show the mis-spelling 'RIG' for 'REG' which can be seen on this counter, too. Observed dates for pieces run from 1702-1774. This one is dated '1771'.
